15 Tips to Pass Your Driving Test in Adelaide
1. Know the 5 slow-speed manoeuvres
Practise reverse parallel parking, angle parking, 3-point turn, U-turn and moving off until you can do them confidently. These are specifically assessed in the SA VORT.
2. Do proper mirror checks
Check your mirrors regularly and before changing direction, speed or lanes.
3. Always check your blind spot
A quick head check can make the difference between a safe manoeuvre and a serious error.
4. Use your indicators correctly
Signal early enough to clearly communicate your intentions, and cancel the indicator after completing the manoeuvre.
5. Take extra care at GIVE WAY signs
Donβt just slow downβproperly assess traffic and give way when required.
6. Come to a complete STOP at STOP signs
Stop before the stop line. Donβt roll through, even when the intersection looks empty.
7. Be very careful at roundabouts
Select the correct lane, give way appropriately, indicate correctly and maintain good observation.
8. Donβt rush lane changes
Use mirrors β signal β blind-spot check β move when safe.
9. Watch your speed constantly
Donβt rely only on what the car feels like. Check your speedometer, particularly after leaving intersections and when entering lower-speed areas.
10. Look well ahead
Donβt stare only at the vehicle directly in front. Look for pedestrians, cyclists, parked cars, intersections, traffic lights and changing conditions.
11. Keep a safe following distance
Give yourself enough time to react if the vehicle ahead suddenly brakes.
12. Be particularly careful around pedestrians
Watch crossings, intersections, shopping areas, schools and people near parked cars.
13. Stay calm if you make a small mistake
A minor mistake doesnβt automatically mean youβve failed. Correct it safely and continue driving rather than panicking.
14. Practise on different Adelaide roads
Donβt practise only on quiet residential streets. Include busy roads, multilane roads, roundabouts, traffic lights, hills, parking areas and changing traffic conditions. The VORT general drive assesses a range of situations and interaction with other road users.
15. Drive safelyβnot just to βbeat the testβ
The SA VORT requires a 90% or higher overall score and no breach of road law. A road-law breach can result in an immediate fail and termination of the test.
β The biggest tip
Observation is one of the most important skills. Before making a manoeuvre, get into the habit of thinking:
Mirrors β Signal β Blind spot β Act safely
And donβt forget that the VORT can take up to about 45 minutes, so you need to maintain concentration throughout the entire drive
