First Caravan owners this one's for you.

With rising living costs more and more people are considering purchasing caravans to live off grid to try and cut costs, while this is a great idea understanding and having education when it comes to purchasing your first Caravan will go a long way.
This morning we've had a perfect example of that.

A customer purchased a secondhand Caravan on the premise that they could run their three-way absorbsion fridge indefinitely from a battery off grid without any Solar. Using a generator to activate the mains charger to charge every few days.

Now for those that understand the implications here you know exactly what I mean.

In short, a three-way absorption style fridge cannot run indefinitely from a battery.
Not only was it not designed to do this but it is completely inefficient with most fridges drawing in excess of 25 A/h at 12 Volt.
The rules are simple with any three-way absorption style fridge.

1. Gas = Freecamping (3-4 weeks/9kg bottle)
2. 240v = Caravan parks, mains power available
3. 12 volt = while driving, transport between destinations.

The majority of Caravan manufacturers will have the fridges Heater element a.k.a. 12 Volt heater element circuit wired through the 12pin trailer plug or Anderson plug.
You would then need your vehicle wired correctly so it can maintain the fridges temperature until you arrive at your camp.

People selling secondhand caravans telling potential buyers that a three-way fridge can run from batteries are either uneducated or telling porky pies for a sale.

We all know the only solution for a fridge of grid is batteries and Solar. Getting this combination right is crucial for longevity.
Whether you maintain it with a mains power charger and the generator or have enough solar coming in to keep up with a compressor fridge.

In summary please do your research and understand what you can and can't do off grid from any fridge that you were looking to purchase that is included with your Caravan.
