The 1954 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL “Gullwing”

Most Gullwings live under a cover. This one still moves.

Before it was a road car, it was a race car — the W194 that won Le Mans and the Carrera Panamericana in 1952, two years before Mercedes-Benz agreed to build a version for the road.

No power steering, no assists. Just a 3.0L fuel-injected inline-six and direct mechanical feedback, exactly as it left Stuttgart.

Mercedes AMG ONE

This is as close as you’ll ever get to a Formula 1 car with number plates.

Mercedes-AMG didn’t design it to look fast, they took an actual F1 power unit and made it road-legal. The steering wheel says it all: DRS button, Pit Limiter, rotary dials straight from a race car. Open the doors and it gets more serious still, exposed carbon fibre everywhere, built for weight savings, not show.

1.6-litre V6 hybrid, four electric motors, over 1,050hp and limited to 275units.

The 1954 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL “Gullwing”

Debuted at the New York Motor Show in February 1954. The tubular spaceframe chassis made regular doors impossible — Mercedes’ engineers solved it by hinging them to the roof instead, and the Gullwing was born almost by accident.

Under the hood: a 3.0L fuel-injected inline-six, the first of its kind on a production car, making it the fastest road car in the world at launch.
