That ticking sound on a cold start doesn’t always mean lifter problems.

On many modern German cars, the sound you’re hearing can come from the direct injection system. During cold start, the engine demands high fuel pressure, and the injectors operate extremely quickly—creating a distinct mechanical ticking that can easily be mistaken for valvetrain noise.

As the engine warms up, the operating conditions change and the sound can become much less noticeable.

Before replacing parts, diagnose the sound properly. A normal injector tick and an actual mechanical problem are two very different things.
