Genesis shows off first EV model, the Electrified G80

Genesis, Hyundai Motor’s luxury offshoot, has officially introduced its first-ever EV model, the Electrified G80, at the 2021 Shanghai International Automobile Industry Exhibition (Auto Shanghai 2021).

Based on the flagship Genesis sedan, the G80, the Electrified G80 promises even more smoothness and stability thanks to its all-electric powertrain.

The Electrified G80 delivers an estimated maximum range per charge of more than 500km and the 350kW rapid charging enables the battery to charge from 10 per cent to 80 per cent in just 22 minutes. It comes standard with all-wheel drive and accelerates from 0 to 60 mph just in 4.9 seconds.

The flagship EV features an Electronic Control Suspension with Road Preview, an adaptive suspension system that can be controlled by information supplied through the front-facing camera, also helps to create an optimal, smooth driving experience.

The Genesis signature Crest Grille features an inverted G-Matrix pattern in the Electrified G80. The charging door is located in the grille’s upper right corner, and is invisible when closed.

Genesis says it has sourced various natural or recycled materials for its interior such as leather with natural dyes for the seats, console, and rear seat armrest, eco-friendly natural wood trim with recycled wood, and environment-friendly, recycled PET fabrics.

“Today is very special because it represents a variety of firsts for the Genesis brand, not only because this is Genesis’ very first appearance at Auto Shanghai, but also as the first time we are unveiling a new product outside of Korea,” said Jay Chang, Global Head of the Genesis brand. “The Electrified G80, the perfect balance of athleticism and elegance, marks the beginning of our journey into the EV market, representing Genesis in the era of electrification.”

RTA opens Al Khawaneej Roads Improvement Project to improve Dubai-Sharjah link

• Improves the link with Airport Street, Al Awir and Al Khawaneej communities

• Doubles the capacity of Al Khawaneej intersection from 8,000 to 16,000 vehicles per hour

• Reduces the waiting time at the intersection of Al Khawaneej -Sh Zayed bin Hamdan Al Nahyan Roads from 330 seconds to 45 seconds

• Cuts the waiting time at Al Khawaneej-Al Amardi junction from 120 seconds to 60 seconds

Dubai: Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) on Saturday opened the Al Khawaneej Roads Improvement Project. The project includes an underpass of three lanes in each direction at the junction of Al Khawaneej and Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan Al Nahyan Roads as well as a bridge of two lanes in each direction at the junction of Al Amardi and Emirates Roads in the direction of Al Awir.

Mattar Mohammed Al Tayer, Director-General, Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the Roads and Transport Authority, said, “The Improvement of Al Khawaneej Roads Project is one of the key strategic projects for improving the links between Dubai and Sharjah through the improvement of vertical roads linking with the Emirates Road and Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road up to the Airport Street.”

“The project contributes to slashing the travel time between the Emirates Road and the Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road from 25 minutes to 9 minutes, and the waiting time at the junction of Al Khawaneej-Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan Al Nahyan Roads (Al Khawaneej Roundabout) from 330 seconds to just 45 seconds. It also doubles up the capacity of the junction from 8,000 to 16,000 vehicles per hour, and halves the waiting time at the intersection of Al Khawaneej-Al Amardi Roads, which has been upgraded from a roundabout to a surface junction, from 120 seconds to 60 seconds,” explained Al Tayer.

“The project includes the construction of a tunnel of three lanes in each direction extending 680 metres at the intersection of Al Khawaneej Road with Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan Al Nahyan Road. Works also included the construction of a surface signalised junction to ensure free and safe traffic flow on Al Khawaneej Road, and upgrading the existing roundabout at the intersection of Al Khawaneej-Al Amardi Roads to a signalised junction. The intersection of Al Amardi-Emirates Roads has also been upgraded to a flyover of two lanes in each direction extending 201 metres above the Emirates Road in the direction of Al Awir,” he noted.

“Work is currently underway of constructing a footbridge near Arabian Centre at Al Khawaneej Road, service roads extending 23km along Al Khawaneej and Al Amardi Roads, and some improvements in three junctions at Algiers Street which will be upgraded to signalised junctions. Other construction underway include street lights, rainwater drainage system, directional signs, road markings, and protection works for road safety,” elaborated Al Tayer.

Supporting Corridors

The construction of Al Khawaneej Roads Improvement Project follows the completion and opening of all phases of Improvements of the Airport Street Project involving upgrading four intersections: Rashidiya, Nad Al Hamar, Marrakech, and Casablanca. The project had immensely improved the traffic flow, reduced the waiting time and sorted out congestions caused by overlapping traffic.

It also follows the opening of the Tripoli Road Improvement Project providing a link between Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road and Emirates Road. The opening of this 12-km road eased the traffic flow, improved the entry points of Al Warqaa and Mirdif along Tripoli Road and enhanced the safety along the corridor.

Ramadan 2021: 13 tips to help drivers stay safe on the roads during the holy month

A road safety expert urged motorists to take extra care behind the wheel during Ramadan.

Thomas Edelmann, the founder of Road Safety UAE, issued a 13-step guide to steering of accidents during the holy month.

Using data compiled from more than 6,000 insurance claims during previous Ramadans, the campaign group found the peak time for accidents is between 2pm and 5pm, in the run-up to iftar, as drivers rush home to break their fast, and in the busy morning period between 8am and 10am.

"Just before sunset is a particularly problematic time, in part because people are at their most hungry, and also because motorists are rushing towards their iftar appointments," said Mr Edelmann.

A combination of fasting and high temperatures can result in dehydration and low blood sugar which has an adverse effect on concentration, vision and reaction, according to Mr Edelmann.

A rise in injuries and fatalities resulting from road accidents is traditionally reported during Ramadan.

Police warn the public to extra vigilant during the period, by ensuring they take their time and do not tailgate.

Motorists aged over 40 and male motorists are the most likely to be involved in a crash, the Road Safety UAE study concluded.

So how can you avoid getting involved in an accident this Ramadan? Here are ten salient pieces of advice from the team at Road Safety UAE.

13 road safety tips for Ramadan

1. Be aware of your own potential limitations
2. Watch out for other traffic participants potentially s uffering from hunger or fatigue
3. Expect the unexpected – we must all drive defensively
4. Plan for possible delays and add a time buffer
5. Always wear your seat belt
6. If you are male and over 40, be extra careful
7. Approach signals carefully at iftar time even when the light is green, and do not jump red lights
8. Keep a sufficient distance between their vehicle and do not tailgate
9. Plan your schedules properly and leave early to avoid the need for rushing or speeding
10. Around sunset prior to iftar, be very cautious or stay off the roads at sundown if you can avoid it
11. Use your lights during dusk, before iftar
12. Avoid fatigue and get enough sleep, and pull over immediately if you becoming drowsy
13. If you are a 'weaker' user of the roads (pedestrian, cyclist or motorcyclist), watch out for potentially irrational behaviour of other traffic participants.

Dubai traffic alert: Multi-vehicle crash after dense fog

Multiple vehicles crashed in Dubai due to dense fog on Wednesday morning, the police have said.

The accident between "several" vehicles was reported on Emirates Road, after Al Ruwaiya Bridge towards Abu Dhabi.

The Dubai Police warned of dense fog in the area and urged motorists to drive carefully.

As dense fog engulfed various parts of the country this morning, authorities had announced the reduction of speed limits on some major roads.

However, in the latest update, Abu Dhabi Police have now stated that speed limits on Abu Dhabi's external roads are back to normal.

Police had announced speed limit reduction on major roads from and towards the Capital to 80kmph.

“The Abu Dhabi Police call on motorists to exercise caution due to reduced visibility during the fog. They are urged to follow changing speed limits displayed on electronic information boards,” social media posts issued by the police said.

The police had activated speed reduction system on Al Ain - Dubai road ( Al Fouah - Al Hiyar ), Mohammed bin Rashid Road (Abu Dhabi - Dubai), Maktoum bin Rashid Road (Abu Dhabi - Dubai), Sweihan- Al Sad Road and on Nahil - Al Hiyar Road.

Drivers were urged to increase the distance between vehicles to avoid accidents and to never overtake/change lanes in low visibility conditions.

The penalty for not adhering to safe driving instructions during fog is Dh500 and four black points, according to the Federal Traffic Law.

UAE in major push towards sustainable transportation

Dubai Metro has emerged as one of the pioneering projects in an integrated mass transit system that has contributed to preserving the environment and reducing carbon emissions in the emirate and country.

Statistics show that Dubai residents rely on the metro as their preferred means of transportation, which confirms its strategic value as a vital project that supports the overall development trends in the emirate.

The number of electric and hybrid cars is increasing rapidly in the country, which is most evident in the taxi fleets in several emirates of the country, while reports have confirmed the increase in personal electric vehicles (PEV) in recent years.

The UAE is the leader in the change towards independent electric cars in the region and has succeeded in converting approximately 20 per cent of the car fleet of government departments to electric cars, and targets to enter about 42,000 electric cars on its streets by 2030.

The UAE has set national standards for emission levels resulting from land transport, including the air protection system to protect the environment from pollution issued according to Cabinet Resolution No. 37 of 2006 as part of regulations for Federal Law No. 24 of 1999 regarding protection of the environment, and periodic examination of pollutants emitted from vehicle exhausts as a condition for licencing.

Focus on the road while driving or pay fine, warn Abu Dhabi Police

Abu Dhabi Police have urged motorists to focus on the roads while driving because being distracted can lead to serious traffic accidents. In fact, failing to be attentive while driving is a traffic offence that can result in an Dh800 fine and four traffic black points, police warned.

Accident clip

Abu Dhabi’s traffic authorities also released a video clip on Friday, showing a serious accident that occurred when a motorist was evidently distracted while driving. The clip shows slow-moving traffic on an Abu Dhabi road. One golden colour SUV on the left-most lane horrifyingly fails to slow down until at the very last moment and rams into the vehicle in front while swerving. The sudden swerve also causes the SUV to hit a number of other cars on the lanes on the right and at the centre, before finally crashing into the road median.
The clip was released as part of Abu Dhabi’s Be Road Safe initiative, which shows road users various instances of wrongful road behaviours recorded on CCTV so that they can be avoided.

Causes for distraction

According to the Police, drivers are most often distracted because they use handheld devices while driving to take pictures, surf the internet, make calls or scroll through social media. Such distractions have time and again turned out to be fatal for motorists, their co-passengers and other road users as well.

Carmaker Volkswagen announces more job cuts

German automaker Volkswagen will shed up to 5,000 jobs between now and the end of 2023 as part of cost-cutting to finance its transition to electric vehicles, the company said in a statement Sunday.

Up to 900 employees would opt for an early retirement scheme while others would leave the company as part of a gradual halting of their activities, it said.

It did not give a precise figure for those employees, saying only that it would be in the lower end of a "four-digit number", an expression usually used to mean between 2,000 to 4,000.

The job losses were intended to make a major contribution to managing the company's costs, said the statement.

"Thanks to our high level of investment in the expansion of electromobility and digitisation, Volkswagen has been able to establish itself as a pioneer of automotive change," human resources director Gunnar Killian said in the statement.

"We now want to consolidate our position of strength," he added.

"This will require a continuation of a strict cost management in order to finance the necessary investments in the future."

In 2020, Volkswagen lost its top ranking in the world automobile market to Toyota, selling 9.3 million vehicles, down 15 percent on 2019.

Like all car makers, it has been hit hard by the economic fallout from the coronavirus pandemic but has said it expects a significant rise in turnover in 2021.

This latest round of jobs cuts follows the 2019 announcement of up to 7,000 job losses by the group's leading brand, VW.

Earlier this month, Volkswagen said it hoped electric vehicles would account for 70 percent of its European sales by 2030, doubling its previous target in the face of ever stricter legislation.

The efforts are part of a strategy which has seen the Volkswagen group invest more than 30 billion euros into e-mobility in order to comply with stricter environmental rules in the EU.

Tesla has upped the pressure on major German carmakers such as Volkswagen in recent years with its plans to open a manufacturing plant just outside Berlin next July.

Coronavirus: contactless app payment for taxi rides in Abu Dhabi
Passengers will now be able to make contactless payments for taxi rides in Abu Dhabi during the coronavirus outbreak.

The payments can be made by downloading the Abu Dhabi Taxi app, which is available on Apple Store and Google Play.

Passengers need to create an account and provide credit card details, which are saved for future taxi journeys.

Once the trip is over, passengers can make the payment through the app without any need to interact with the driver.

An Integrated Transport Centre representative said the move was in line with the organisation’s efforts to improve the level of service and minimise human interaction to limit the spread of the virus.

The centre manages public transport in the emirate.

“The online payment feature will greatly benefit tourists by facilitating the payment of taxi fares without the need for carrying cash,” the ITC representative said.

“In light of the current health situation with the risk of coronavirus outbreak, all public means of transport, including taxis, are being sterilised regularly at the beginning and end of each work shift.

“Drivers are provided sterilising products to clean the vehicle after each trip as part of the precautionary measures ITC is undertaking.”

The representative said no more than two passengers were allowed in an Abu Dhabi taxi at a time.

Passengers must also wear face masks and gloves and should be seated only in the back seat.

Plastic insulators to isolate the driver from passengers will remain in place and hand sanitisers will be available for those on board.

The ITC is also considering whether to introduce other means of payment, such as electronic wallets, in the future.
