The motorcycle cam gear set can get damaged quickly due to several mechanical problems.
Main causes of cam gear set damage
* Poor oil circulation — insufficient lubrication causes excessive friction and wear on the cam gears.
* Low engine oil — the oil level drops, increasing heat and wear.
* Incorrect cam timing — improper installation can cause abnormal gear loading.
* Worn camshaft or rocker arms — damaged components can increase resistance and noise.
* Damaged or misaligned gears — incorrect gear meshing causes rapid wear.
* Poor-quality spare parts — low-quality gears may wear out quickly.
* Engine overheating — excessive temperature can accelerate wear.
* Loose bearings or excessive shaft play — the gears may not mesh correctly.
* Debris in engine oil — metal particles can damage the gear teeth.
* Incorrect installation — improper fitting or clearances can lead to early failure.
How to prevent damage
* Check the oil pump and confirm proper oil circulation.
* Inspect the camshaft, rocker arms, bearings and gear teeth.
* Check gear alignment, backlash and shaft play according to the manufacturer’s specifications.
* Use the correct engine oil and change it at the recommended intervals.
* Replace damaged related components before installing a new gear set.
Important mechanic’s tip: If a new cam gear set wears out again within a short time, check oil circulation and gear alignment first. Simply replacing the gears may not solve the underlying problem.
