What does BLUE smoke from my exhaust mean?

If your car is blowing blue smoke, it’s a clear sign that the engine is burning oil. What happens is that the valve guide seals or piston rings are worn out, and oil is leaking past from where it should be lubricating the moving parts, to the combustion chamber where it’s being burned up with the fuel.

If you’re seeing this kind of smoke, check your oil regularly and watch for consumption issues. While an issue that normally should require immediate attention and expensive repairs, including some internal replacement parts, if your vehicle is old and the leak is minimal, it can be carefully managed by topping up the oil on a regular basis.

Along with environmental damage, burning oil can cause rough starts, as the process can ruin the car’s spark plugs.

There is another reason for blue smoke, and that’s if the car is turbocharged; the smoke being a sign that the blower is in need of rebuilding or replacement.

What does GRAY smoke from my exhaust mean?

Gray smoke is hard to diagnose directly. Like blue smoke, it can mean that the car is burning oil or suffering from a bad turbocharger. Take the same precautions as with blue smoke, and check for excessive oil consumption.

Gray smoke can also be an issue with your automatic transmission fluid getting burned up in the engine. A faulty transmission vacuum modulator would be the culprit in this situation, leading to transmission fluid getting sucked into the engine and getting burned up.

Furthermore, gray smoke could mean a stuck PCV valve. The PCV system (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) cuts down on harmful emissions by recycling them back into the combustion chamber. However, when the PCV valve gets stuck, pressure can build and lead to oil leaks. Fortunately, PCV valves aren’t expensive, and can be a quick job for a mechanic or a do-it-yourselfer.

What does WHITE smoke from my exhaust mean?

White smoke can be nothing to be concerned about if it’s thin, like v***r. This is probably the result of normal condensation buildup inside the exhaust system. This kind of smoke disappears quickly.

However, thicker smoke is a big problem, and can be caused the engine burning coolant. This can be the result of a serious issue like a blown head gasket, a damaged cylinder head, or a cracked engine block – all of which are costly repairs.

Don’t ignore it, however, as the problem could become far worse. Even a small leak in the coolant can lead to overheating and serious risk of damage to the engine. A coolant leak can also mix with oil and cause serious headaches for you and your car.

What does BLACK smoke from my exhaust mean?

Black exhaust smoke means the engine is burning too much fuel. The first think you should check is your air-filter and other intake components like sensors, fuel injectors and the fuel-pressure regulator. Other reasons could be a clogged fuel return line. Black smoke is usually the easiest issue to diagnose and fix, but burning unnecessary fuel will definitely affect your fuel economy, so don’t think of avoiding this one to save money, it won’t work.

Any smoke coming from your car’s exhaust pipe is a sign that your car is in distres

ENGINE OIL AND ITS DIFFERENT GRADES

Engine oil has different grades and types Depending on the type of engine whether turbo or non turbo.

Petrol oil and desiel oil for either turbo or non turbo.

Petrol oil that is used for normal aspirated is 20W50.
for turbo charged petrol one muse use one called "High mileage" which is known as synthetic oil. this oil can only be changed between 20000 and 30000 kilometers

For diesel engines one can use 700 l**e oil. There is also what is called 15W40. Between these two 15W40 is ordinary diesel oil for any diesel engine non turbo and 700 is used for turbo diesel engines.

Depending on the engine capacity that is what will determine the amount of engine oil need in your vehicle.

In times of need if diesel or petrol oil is not found for a vehicle that is not turbo charged you can use FAE40 this is a mono-grade oil(Basic engine) in both petrol and diesel cars

DID YOU KNOW AND DO YOU CARE?

Keeping your car roadworthy

Keeping your car roadworthy is an important part of vehicle ownership. It's also essential if your car is going to pass its road-worthiness test during registration renewali. Pre-empt problems that could render your car unsafe to drive with our quick tips.

To test that your car is roadworthy it must be taken to an authorised vehicle tester for safety checksiii. A roadworthy test will ensure that your car is safe for normal road useii.

Regular maintenance checks can reduce the likelihood of future expensive repair costs. Source: iii.
Some common problems picked up in roadworthy tests include:

Oil leaksiv
Condition of tyresv
Faulty lightsiv
Non-secure seats and seat beltsv
Brake defectsiv
Excessive smoke and noisev
Windscreen chips and cracks
Vehicle body flaws
Although it's important to take your vehicle to a mechanic for difficult maintenance, you can pre-empt some of the common problems by doing regular checks to discover which parts require maintenancevi. The following are tests that you can do yourself.

Check your vehicle's fluids: Your vehicle needs to be regularly checked for fluid leaks. Leaks could see levels drop in your coolant, engine oil, transmission or brake fluid. Among other problems, a drop in fluid below minimum levels could damage your engine, cause a breakdown or make your vehicle unsafe to drivevii. Significant drops in fluid levels are also indicators to larger problems, like a leaking radiator or a problem with the brakesvii, viii.

Check your tyres: Worn or damaged tyres can greatly reduce your vehicle's grip on the road, making it less safe to drivevi. Your tyres must be in good condition (including the sidewalls), and have adequate tread and air pressureix. This will make your car safe to drive and allow it to pass the roadworthiness testvi.

Roadworthy tests must be conducted by an authorised vehicle tester, operating from a specified garage or service station. Source: iv
Check your lights and horn: One of the easiest steps is to check that all lights are workingvi. This is essential for everyday driving as well as when taking your vehicle for a roadworthy testv. The most effective way is get a friend to help check if they are workingx. Don't forget to check all your lights - headlights, front and rear parking lights, turn indicators (blinkers), brake lights, reversing lights and number plate lights.

Windscreen, wipers and washers: Make sure your windscreen is free of damage including chips, cracks, scratches and discolouration. The area in front of the driver is particularly important. If there is damage consider consulting a windscreen expert to see if repairs are possible or if the screen needs to be replaced. You should also make sure windscreen wipers and washers should also be in good working orderxi.

Check the interior: Checking the interior of your car for unsecured or damaged items is essential in preventing potential injury. Loose items can dislodge while driving or in an accident and cause serious injuriesvi.

Roadworthy tests

Roadworthy test regulations differ between states and territoriesxii. You may require a roadworthy test or safety check for:

registration renewal
initial registration
vehicles previously registered in another state or territory
selling a vehicle
lapsed registration
vehicle modifications
a defect notice
Before taking your vehicle for a roadworthy test, make sure you are aware of the specific regulations that are relevant in your state or territory.

Following these relatively simple checks can help you avoid failing a roadworthy test, prolong the life of your cariii and improve safety.

Hai my name is Car, I may look gorgeous on the outside but underneath that beautiful body is a tormented me.

You see i used to be my drivers dream car, he stared at me through the shop window every day and he worked hard for me, I was the most beautiful thing he had ever seen, oh it was love at first sight.
When he finally saved enough he rushed to were i lived and paid to have me. He drove off with me with such pride. I yearned to be loyal to my new owner. He seemed so in love with me. i was a beautiful first love and i was determined to drive him as best as i could.

Then one day he changed, the constant car wash reduced, he became to busy for me and even though i was with him every day, he forgot that i too needed to see my doctor every now and then. i started with pain in my left tyre, and a cough every time he started me. so many ilments but he never had me checked. now i am all tired inside and he still does not have the time to get me checked.

I do not blame him i feel sory for him. He has a family and a job to attend too. he just does not have the time. oh how i wish i could tell him that he neednt wory because a doctor could come to us and see me from home.

Now today i am completely dead, i havnt been serviced in a 10months. all my parts are tired and can not go on.

i am what used to be his biggest pride but today he shall think i betrayed him.

this is my story.

Yours truly,
Car

Dear Vehicle driver,

A motor vehicle service is a series of maintenance procedures carried out at a set time interval or after the vehicle has travelled a certain distance. The service intervals are specified by the vehicle manufacturer in a service schedule and some modern cars display the due date for the next service electronically on the instrument panel.

The completed services are usually recorded in a service book which is rubber stamped by the service centre upon completion of each service. A complete service history usually adds to the resale value of a vehicle.

Maintenance tasks commonly carried out during a motor vehicle service include:

Change the engine oil
Replace the oil filter
Replace the air filter
Replace the fuel filter
Replace the spark plugs
Tune the engine
Check level and refill brake fluid
Check level and refill power steering fluid
Check level and refill Automatic Transmission Fluid
Grease and lubricate components
Inspect and replace the timing belt if needed
Check condition of the tires

Mechanical parts that may cause the car to cease transmission or prove unsafe for the road are also noted and advised upon.

In the United Kingdom, few parts that are not inspected on the MOT test are inspected and advised upon a Service Inspection.

These include:

Clutch
Gearbox
Car Battery
Engine components (further inspections than MOT)
