Was the Mazda 787B a victim of changing regulations, or did Mazda miss the opportunity to build an even greater legacy from one of motorsport's most iconic victories? π€π
Every now and then, a car comes along that changes motorsport history forever. Not because it was the fastest, not because it dominated every race weekend, but because it achieved something nobody else could.
The Mazda 787B is one of those cars.
Ask any South African petrolhead about legendary race cars and you'll hear names like the Porsche 962, Jaguar XJR-12, Nissan R92CP, or the mighty Mercedes-Benz C11. Yet somehow, sitting among these giants was a bright orange and green Mazda powered by an engine that many people thought would never survive endurance racing.
And then it won Le Mans.
But here's the question I've always wondered: Did Mazda truly give the 787B the future it deserved, or did changing regulations and pressure from bigger manufacturers kill one of the greatest motorsport stories ever told?
# # The Underdog Nobody Expected
Back in the late 1980s and early 1990s, Mazda was obsessed with proving that rotary engines belonged at the highest level of motorsport.
The 787 and later the 787B were developed for Group C racing and the World Sportscar Championship. These weren't ordinary race cars. They were powered by Mazda's legendary 2.6-litre four-rotor R26B rotary engine.
Unlike traditional piston engines used by Mercedes-Benz, Jaguar, Porsche, Nissan and Toyota, the rotary design was completely different.
The R26B featured:
β’ Four rotors
β’ Variable intake systems
β’ Three spark plugs per rotor
β’ Ceramic apex seals
β’ Variable-length intake trumpets
In qualifying trim the engine was capable of producing around 900 horsepower and revving to an insane 10,000 rpm.
If you've ever heard a 787B at full song, you'll know it doesn't sound like a car. It sounds more like a fighter jet screaming down the M1.
# # Not the Fastest... But Possibly the Smartest
Here's what made the 787B special.
It wasn't the quickest car over a single lap.
Mercedes, Jaguar, Porsche, Nissan and Toyota all had cars capable of setting faster qualifying times. Mazda knew they couldn't outgun the big manufacturers in raw speed.
So they focused on something else.
Reliability.
The engineering team at Mazdaspeed understood that endurance racing isn't won by being the fastest for one lap. It's won by surviving 24 brutal hours while everyone else breaks.
For 1991 they refined the car even further.
The intake system became continuously variable, improving torque delivery to 608 Nm. The suspension was revised, larger wheels were fitted, and Mazda introduced carbon ceramic brakes β a first for one of their race cars.
Most importantly, they deliberately reduced power output.
Instead of chasing headlines with maximum horsepower, Mazda restricted the engine to around 650 hp and lowered the redline to 8,500 rpm to improve fuel economy and reliability.
It was a bold move.
While rivals chased top speed, Mazda focused on cornering speed, efficiency and durability.
# # The Race That Changed Everything
When the 1991 24 Hours of Le Mans arrived, nobody considered Mazda the favourite.
The competition included factory-backed giants with bigger budgets and more powerful machinery.
Mazda entered three cars:
β’ No. 18 Mazda 787B
β’ No. 55 Mazda 787B
β’ No. 56 Mazda 787
The famous No. 55 car wore the now-iconic orange and green Renown livery that motorsport fans still celebrate today.
Despite qualifying well, the new 3.5-litre cars were given priority positions on the grid, pushing Mazda further back than their actual pace deserved.
Then something unexpected happened.
Before the race, team manager Takayoshi Ohashi abandoned Mazda's traditional conservative strategy and instructed the No. 55 crew to drive flat out.
Not like an endurance race.
Like a sprint race.
The decision was based on confidence in the car's reliability and fuel efficiency.
As the race unfolded, rival teams began experiencing mechanical problems.
The mighty Mercedes-Benz entries suffered issues.
Others struggled with the reliability of the new 3.5-litre engine regulations.
Meanwhile the Mazda just kept going.
Hour after hour.
Lap after lap.
By the 22nd hour, the impossible suddenly looked possible.
The No. 55 Mazda 787B inherited the lead after another Mercedes was forced into the pits with mechanical problems.
And then history happened.
Driven by Johnny Herbert, Volker Weidler and Bertrand Gachot, the Mazda crossed the finish line first after 362 laps and 4,932.2 kilometres.
The winning car suffered virtually no major issues throughout the entire race.
Just a blown headlight bulb and a precautionary wheel bearing replacement.
That's it.
# # A Victory That Still Stands Alone
The significance of that victory cannot be overstated.
The 1991 Le Mans win made Mazda:
β’ The first Japanese manufacturer ever to win Le Mans
β’ The only manufacturer to win Le Mans with a rotary-powered car
β’ The only Le Mans winner powered by a non-reciprocating engine design
As of 2026, that record still stands.
Toyota eventually gave Japan another Le Mans victory in 2018, but nobody has repeated what Mazda achieved with a rotary engine.
# # So Why Didn't We See More of the 787B?
This is where the story becomes frustrating.
You would think Mazda would build an entire global marketing campaign around one of the greatest motorsport victories ever achieved.
But they didn't.
The winning car was immediately retired.
The other 787Bs raced briefly before Group C regulations changed.
Formula One-style 3.5-litre engines became the new standard and rotary engines were effectively outlawed from top-level competition.
Just like that, the 787B's career was over.
Mazda moved on to the MXR-01, which never achieved the same success.
Even stranger, Mazda never fully capitalised on the Le Mans victory from a marketing perspective. Yes, it helped strengthen the brand's image and inspired special editions like the Le Mans-inspired MX-5, but many enthusiasts still believe the company never truly celebrated the achievement the way it deserved.
# # The Legacy Lives On
Despite its short racing life, the 787B became immortal.
Today it's considered one of the greatest race cars ever built.
Not because it was unbeatable.
Not because it dominated an era.
But because it proved that doing things differently can still beat the giants.
In a motorsport world where everyone followed the same formula, Mazda dared to back a rotary engine when nobody else would.
And for one unforgettable weekend in 1991, that gamble paid off.
