Sometimes your car gives you a few small warnings before a gearbox or diff problem turns into a proper headache.
Keep an eye - and an ear - out for things like:
* A delay when you put the car into Drive or Reverse
* Jerking or shuddering when it changes gears
* A whining, humming or grinding noise
* Revs going up, but the car isn’t really picking up speed
* Oil leaking underneath the car
* A howling or whining sound that gets louder the faster you drive
Now, before you start mentally spending your whole salary - none of these automatically mean your gearbox or diff is finished.
Sometimes it’s something much smaller, like a leak, a worn bearing or a service that’s overdue.
The important thing is not to ignore it and hope the noise magically disappears. Cars are unfortunately not great at fixing themselves.
