We've always been drawn to fire.

Long before screens stole our attention, it was where stories got told and friends gathered. Today it's still a massive part of our heritage and remains the heart of every camp.

For Heritage Day, our mate Marcel from Donkey Long Tong breaks down what makes a good fire. It comes down to three things: location (Weskus), people (Maé & Oré - Travelburners) and gear (the Jack Sack — and is that a new shovel we see?).

Get those right and you're halfway there. The rest is all about the wood. Hard, dense, and lots of it. Because the moment the fire dies so does your time out there. Marcel stacks wood in a hashtag formation to keep the airflow moving, always runs a feeder fire on the side and never rushes it. Patience is everything.

Full breakdown in the clip. Now tell us your tips and tricks, how will you be lighting up?

There's no such thing as the "right" overland rig. Only what's right for you. (That said, Rudi from Alublack’s personal rig is right up our alley.)

Rudi's advice to anyone planning their build is to do your homework, shop around and ask yourself: where do I want to go, who's coming with me and how long do I want to be out there?

That, and that it's your money, so spend it however you like. Just remember that you get what you pay for.

Describe your ultimate rig. 👇

Say hello to Dirk, the man behind Van die pad af.

The adventure filmmaker recently took us deep into Iona National Park, Angola, the long way around through Namibia. Two epic hour-long episodes are already live on Opposite Lock’s YouTube channel, with the finale dropping this Sunday.

In this reel, Dirk’s giving away free game. No gatekeeping, just his go-to tips for creating content that actually tells a story.

For anyone wanting to film their own adventures better, watch now.

Mitch from Overland 4x4 Fitment builds overland vehicles.

Check out his tough Toyota Land Cruiser and discover why he considers the Shadow Awning the most underated piece of gear on his rig.

We think he’s thought of everything, but tell us in the comments what you would add to this build?

We asked visitors at the SA 4x4 and Outdoor Show one simple question.

Watch to the end then tell us in the comments what you love most about the great outdoors.
