The past two years have been incredibly challenging for MPS UK, A W Mobile Mechanic, and myself personally.
Expanding the business, setting up a dedicated garage, taking on new lines of work, and facing a significant increase in overheads—all of this occurred amidst personal difficulties and external pressures.
I established the garage to handle more in-depth work, primarily for the MPS community. With new bills and no guaranteed income, I took on every job possible, saying "yes" to everything to ensure a steady workflow. This approach initially worked well.
However, a few months in, my yard was targeted. Several car windows were smashed, a deliberate attack on a unique vehicle which I had taken on for work, along with other cars—including my own—sustaining collateral damage. All affected customers were promptly informed, and I personally covered the cost of all repairs. Nothing came of this as the Police didn't have enough evidence to follow it up. I have video footage of two people causing the damage and running away. I know exactly who it was, the video unfortunately doesn't show their faces and there's no other evidence so I can't take it further. Its one of those things Ive had to take on the chin and learn from.
A few months later, I endured a horrific attack in my workshop. Three men, one of whom was a long-time customer, forced their way in, assaulted me, held an angle grinder to my throat, stole car parts (mostly customer property), tools, and a lockbox containing over ten keys. Two of the three men were arrested that night and then released on bail.
The legal process has been a grueling two-year ordeal. Their sentencing was supposed to be last week, but it has been pushed back again as one of the defendants attacked the other in court.
As a result of the attack and the ongoing legal process, I've incurred thousands of pounds in debt: refunds to customers, key replacements, lost work, time off, replacement tools, and enhanced security measures.
The trauma and stress inflicted on my family and myself have altered nearly every aspect of our lives. We were forced to move home as our address was compromised, we nearly lost our new home, and we've really struggled, financially, physically, and mentally.
While it has been incredibly tempting to give it all up and seek a "normal" job, I started my own business precisely for the freedom to spend time with my family and do a job I enjoy.
I refuse to let anyone, especially people like those mentioned above, dictate the direction of my business and my personal life.
This post serves as an update and an honest explanation from my perspective, as I've been very quiet on social media lately. I haven't been able to get around to answering calls, messages, and booking in jobs for weeks. Everything is piling up and it's getting a bit overwhelming.
I'm not seeking sympathy or cheap social media engagement. My primary aim is to help current and future customers understand why message replies may be slower than usual, and why there might be delays in getting your car through the queue.
I'm currently having a bit of a reset. Moving things about, reorganizing, and catching up on jobs that have been lingering for a while. I'm in the process of getting a second ramp set up so a hold up on one single ramp doesn't bring everything to a halt.
Running a business is challenging at the best of times; these past two years have been hell.
I'm a one-man band. All admin, social media, messages, calls, invoicing, time on the tools, etc... Just me.
On a More Positive Note...
Amidst the difficulties, there is a smattering of successes. One of which is Ash's Mazda 3 Mk1 MPS.
This car is what truly kickstarted MPS UK.
I had this vehicle for two years, rebuilding almost everything from the ground up. It was a complete mess when I first encountered it, a mobile job for "an oil leak" that quickly escalated into a full engine strip-down and extensive overhaul.
Two years later, I handed it back. Since then, it's been driven to and around the Nürburgring, returned, and completed thousands of very spirited miles without missing a beat. It's currently back with me for a service, a few adjustments, and minor repairs before heading back to its owner. I'll be sharing a series of posts detailing the extensive work I've done on this car – there's simply too much to fit into one update. Keep your eyes peeled for those!
The vast majority of people have shown incredible understanding and patience.I've strived to keep everyone updated on the constant stream of delays and hold-ups that have pushed jobs further back. I'm now just about back on track with jobs, and the current challenge is simply waiting for parts, which has been a nightmare in itself.
Moving Forward
Apologies for the lengthy post. It's been a rough couple of years, and I know there's been a lot of chatter within certain communities about my business and me. Hopefully, this clears a few things up.
Thank you for reading 🤘🏻
