Scott Speed just posted the fastest run in Mount Washington Hillclimb history: 5:11.982 up the 7.6-mile Auto Road in Subaru's purpose-built "Project Midnight" WRX; a 670-hp, 680 lb-ft, sub-2,500-lb carbon-fiber weapon built for exactly one job. That's nearly 17 seconds faster than the old mark.

Here's the part everyone's arguing about in the comments: the record he broke belonged to Travis Pastrana, who ran 5:28.670 back in 2021, when the Auto Road was still part gravel. It's fully paved now. Same mountain, same finish line, different surface underneath.

So where do you land: did Speed reset Pastrana's record, or is this really a new record on what's essentially a new course?

Seven faces, each one instantly recognizable.

STI put its name on an Impreza in 1994, and by the time the Meaneye face arrived the formula was already set: closed deck EJ20, gold wheels, and 276 horsepower on paper because no Japanese automaker was allowed to advertise more. The Type RA cars brought the driver controlled center diff and deleted anything that didn't make them faster.

Then the 22B landed in 1998 with the EJ bored to 2.2 liters, WRC wide body fenders, and roughly 400 built for Japan. The Bugeye is where STI split off into its own model line, running the 2.0 EJ207 and a six speed, and it never reached a US showroom wearing an STI badge. The Blobeye fixed that in 2004 with the 2.5 EJ257, 300 horsepower, DCCD, Brembos, and gold 17s. The Hawkeye closed out the GD in 2006 with retuned suspension and 293 horsepower once SAE changed how it measured.

The Stinkeye moved onto the third gen chassis in 2008 with 305 horsepower, an aluminum hood, and a double wishbone rear end replacing the old struts, and it showed up here as a hatch before the wide body sedan came back in 2011. The Raptoreye arrived in 2015 with the steering ratio quickened to 13.0:1, brake based torque vectoring up front, and that same 305 horsepower, which became 310 in 2018 along with six piston Brembos.

That generation also gave us the Type RA at 500 units and the S209, the first S line car ever sold in the US, with an HKS built turbo, 18.9 psi, and 341 horsepower. It ended in 2021 with nothing to replace it. The Performance B concept out of the Japan Mobility Show is the closest thing to a fifth chapter, and it has the parts that matter: boxer engine, six speed manual, AWD, hatchback, and gold wheels Subaru deliberately left off the concept.

An 'ol reliable TE37 in bronze looks great on just about anything. Still.

The gloss black Advan GT is like a TE37 wearing a nicer shirt. Just as effective, and just a bit flashier.

The ZR10 is the ultimate thin spoke tuner look, and is just as timeless as the first two wheels.

So then, if you had to choose one of these wheels, which would it be?

Dropping the transmission and changing the clutch on an Evo X is kind of like going to the dentist.

It takes time, it hurts a little, but when it's done you feel better about yourself.

Even though we love these cars dearly, let's be real for a second.

Everybody's worked on a car that loves to turn 30 minute jobs into a weekend long side quest. In this case, we want to know which one you think is worse. Subaru or BMW?

Subaru's whole problem is packaging. Though working on them isn't technically difficult, somehow it's a pain. "Engine out" seems to be the path of least resistance to completing jobs that are much easier on other platforms.

BMW's access to what you need isn't too much better, and actually might be worse. Though, you better cross your fingers that the previous owner already swapped out the water pump and thermostat (looking at you E90/E92 folks). Finally, you find out the fasteners are one time use, the job needs a socket that fits nothing else you own, and three plastic parts you didn't come for crack on the way to the one you did.

Is a Corolla worth M2 money?

GRMN Corolla: G16E-GTS, 1.6L turbo three-cylinder, 300 hp and 302 lb-ft. Carbon hood and fenders, back seats gone for a 66 lb drop, Cup 2s from the factory, and a rear wing that adjusts in one degree increments. AWD, six-speed manual only, 730 built worldwide.

2026 M2: S58, 3.0L twin-turbo inline-six, 473 hp and 406 lb-ft with the six-speed manual. Rear-wheel drive, M3 hardware on a shorter wheelbase, low fours to 60, and one of the last manual transmissions M still sells.

One is a factory built track car with a production number nobody can replicate. The other is 173 more horsepower you can order any day of the week.
