🏍️ Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month Tip: Following too closely = riding into danger.
Maintaining a safe following distance is one of the most important—and overlooked—parts of riding safely.
Unlike cars, motorcycles need more time and space to react safely. One sudden stop ahead, and you could be out of options.
Use the 2- to 4-second rule:
Pick a fixed object (like a sign or pole). When the vehicle ahead passes it, count how many seconds it takes you to reach the same point.
2 seconds in ideal conditions
3–4 seconds in rain, at night, or in heavy traffic
Tailgating doesn’t give you control—it takes it away.
Give yourself room to react, space to escape, and the time to stay safe.

Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month Tip: Don’t just stop—open up your view.
As riders, we’re harder to see—and it's just as easy for us to miss something when approaching stop signs or pulling out from side streets.
Here’s how to stay safer:
✅ Creep forward past obstructions like bushes, parked cars, or large vehicles to get a clear view
✅ Angle your bike slightly to improve visibility while still watching cross traffic
✅ Make eye contact with drivers if possible before pulling out
✅ Look left, right, left again—and don’t rush the judgment call
🧠 Taking an extra second to open up your line of sight could be the second that saves your life.
Ride aware. Ride prepared. Ride smart.

Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month: Surface Conditions
Road surfaces change—and so should your lane position.
Weather plays a huge role in how safe (or slippery) the road beneath you is. As motorcyclists, we need to constantly read the road and adjust accordingly.
Tips for Safe Lane Positioning in Any Weather:
☀️ Dry roads – Choose a lane position that maximizes visibility and space cushions
🌧️ Rainy roads – Watch out for slick surfaces (especially near the center of the lane where oil builds up); ride in the left or right tire track instead
❄️ Cold or wet weather – Avoid painted lines, metal grates, and manhole covers—they become extra slippery
🌫️ Foggy or low-visibility conditions – Ride where you’re most likely to be seen, and use reflective gear
Always scan ahead for potholes, gravel, or debris—especially after storms or along rural routes.
Your lane position is more than preference—it’s a safety tool. Use it wisely.

🏍️ Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month: Mirrors
Let’s talk about your mirrors—one of your most important tools for staying aware on the road. www.riders-first.com
✅ The Advantages:
Provide a quick look at what’s behind you
Help you check traffic before lane changes or turns
Essential for situational awareness in busy areas
⚠️ But remember the Limitations:
Blind spots still exist—especially on both sides
Vibration can blur your view at high speeds
Mirrors don’t always show fast-approaching vehicles
Weather and glare can reduce visibility
👀 Safety Tip: Always pair mirror checks with a head check before changing lanes or turning. Mirrors are a great tool—but they’re just one piece of the full awareness puzzle.
Stay alert. Stay informed. Stay safe this May and every ride after.

May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month!
Let’s talk about a crucial topic: Blind Spots.
Too many close calls—and crashes—happen because drivers simply don’t see motorcycles in their mirrors. Riders, this one’s for you: avoid riding in blind spots. Stay visible, especially around larger vehicles like trucks and SUVs that have limited rear and side visibility.
💡 Tips for safer riding:
Stay out of the “no zones” beside and behind vehicles.
Flash your headlights or tap your horn if you think a driver doesn’t see you.
Wear bright or reflective gear to boost visibility.
Always position yourself where you can be seen and make a quick exit if needed.
Let’s look out for each other out there—share this to spread awareness and help keep our roads safer for everyone!
