AWARD WINNING EAA 2025 OSHKOSH Experimental SQ-12 Cub
The SQ-12 Cub was developed over a period of 25 years by perhaps one of the most legendary cub builders ever, Wayne Mackey. Any cub will perform well when they are light. However, no cub will perform as the SQ-12 does when you load it to max weight. It is an all time favorite for Alaska Bush Pilots. They will take one hunting to the top of a mountain and return back with their entire moose, all their gear while launching off the top of the mountain in 150'.
Wayne Mackey developed the very first SQ cub 25 years ago, known as the SQ2. Every subsequent build would incorporate new developments improving the airframes striving to push its performance abilities to what they are today in the SQ-12. Load the SQ-12 to the max and its airborne in 150'. There is no competing cub that comes even close.
I've always wanted the SQ-12, the build requests for Wayne to build one were long. Wayne Mackey ended up moving to Wasilla Alaska 2 years ago. This allowed him to consult the project build to ensure that the highest of standards were followed in this personal build.
History:
This aircraft was built in Wasilla Alaska. The project's purpose was to build a personal cub in a configuration that created every feature and comfort available that many cubs didn't have. The SQ-12 has 3000 hours of build time and 1092 hours of paint time in the project. The grey/black Carbon paint scheme is not a wrap, its accomplished with miles and miles of tape and 1092 hours of labor. The result is difficult to show in an image with the full awe of its beauty visible in person.
At the completion of the project the cub quickly became a hit anywhere it would be displayed. This resulted in an invite to attend the EAA 2025 event at OshKosh Wisconsin.
The aircraft was entered into the judging contest. There were approximately 1100 entrants in the contest with a small handful of awards issued. We were awarded the Outstanding Workmanship award at the event.
Why am I selling perhaps the #1 cub build in the world? I wasn't sure at the start of the project that this would be a project I would repeat again. This only became evident after completing the build. I will be taking the next step and build two at a time moving forward. One of those two I will keep while making one available for delivery at OshKosh 2026.
