🟒 Term of the Day: Right of Way

"Right of way" means the legal right to proceed first in a given traffic situation.

The important thing most drivers misunderstand: you cannot take right of way β€” it can only be given.

What that means in practice:

β†’ At a 4-way stop, the driver who arrives first goes first. Same time β€” car on the right goes first.
β†’ At a yield sign, you give right of way to existing traffic.
β†’ At a crosswalk, pedestrians have right of way β€” even if it isn't painted.
β†’ When merging onto a highway, the highway has right of way.

Knowing who has right of way removes hesitation. Hesitation at the wrong moment is one of the most common causes of collisions for new drivers.

The first solo drive after getting your license is different from any other.

No instructor. No parent in the passenger seat. Just you, the road, and wherever you decide to go.

So, where are you going?

We'll start: a lot of our students say Dunkin' or McDonald's. Which honestly makes complete sense.

Memorial Day weekend is one of the highest-traffic times on CT and MA roads.

More vehicles. More fatigue. More drivers who've been at a gathering for a few hours.

A few things worth keeping in mind before you head out:

β†’ Build in extra time. Congestion is predictable β€” the stress of running late doesn't have to be.
β†’ Rest before long drives. Fatigue affects reaction time the same way impairment does.
β†’ Keep your following distance wider than usual. More volume means more unpredictable behavior.
β†’ If you're the designated driver, own that decision. It matters more than people often acknowledge.

The roads are busiest when the stakes are highest. Drive accordingly.

Stay safe this weekend.

If another vehicle hits you from behind, here's what to do β€” calmly and in order.

1. Take a breath and check yourself. Before anything else, make sure you and anyone in the car are okay.

2. Turn on your hazard lights. This signals to other drivers that something has happened.

3. Move to safety if you can. If the vehicles are drivable, move to the shoulder or a nearby parking lot.

4. Don't move if you're on a highway and it isn't safe. Stay in your vehicle with your seatbelt on and call 911.

5. Exchange information with the other driver: name, phone number, insurance, and license plate.

6. Take photos of both vehicles, the road conditions, and any visible damage.

7. File a police report, especially if there's significant damage or any injury β€” even minor.

8. Contact your insurance company and report the incident.

You don't need to figure everything out in the moment. You just need to stay calm, get safe, and follow the steps.

Save this. πŸ“Œ

Memorial Day weekend often means more drivers, more travel, and more distractions on the road.

Before you head out, remember the basics:
Slow down. Stay focused. Buckle up. Give yourself extra time.

At The Next Street, we teach students that safe driving is about responsibility β€” especially during busy holiday weekends.

This Memorial Day, we honor those who served by taking care of our communities and each other.

Heading out this weekend? Make safety part of the plan.

A few things nobody tells you until you figure them out yourself.

πŸ”§ The arrow on your fuel gauge points to which side the gas cap is on. You'll never pull up to the wrong pump again.

πŸ”§ Your car's AC dehumidifies the air, running it for a few minutes clears a foggy windshield faster than heat alone.

πŸ”§ If your key fob battery is dying and your car won't unlock, hold the fob to the door handle. Some cars still read a low-signal fob at close range.

πŸ”§ Leaving a tiny crack in a window on a hot day drops the interior temperature significantly before you even turn the car on.

πŸ”§ Your sun visor can extend sideways to block glare from the side window, most drivers never use it.
