The Ford water pump the for 3.5 engine is an internal chain driven pump. That means the pump is behind the timing cover in the engine and is driven by the timing chain on a sprocket. If the bearing on the pump fails, the pump will leak coolant into an engineered weep hole so it doesn’t contaminate the engine. Unfortunately, this doesn’t always go as Ford planned and coolant seeps into the engine and contaminates the oil, creating catastrophic engine failure. If you suspect a coolant leak, be sure to get it evaluated. A typical water pump repair for these engines will include not only the water pump, but new chain guides and timing chains as well. $$$$.
