Having ma*****na reclassified as a Schedule III substance does not change the current rules for CDL holders; its use remains strictly prohibited for all individuals in safety-sensitive positions under Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations.
Key Implications for CDL Holders
Federal Prohibition Remains:
The DOT has explicitly stated that it remains unacceptable for any safety-sensitive employee to use ma*****na, regardless of federal scheduling or state-level legalization/medical ma*****na laws.

Testing Continues: Until the DOT and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) change their formal regulations, testing for ma*****na will continue under the existing rules (49 CFR Part 40).
A positive test result will still lead to removal from safety-sensitive functions and require completion of a return-to-duty process with a Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) if the driver wishes to return to a DOT-regulated job.

No "Prescription" Exemption: Even if Schedule III status allows for medical prescriptions, a valid prescription will not automatically exempt a CDL holder from DOT rules. The DOT ultimately determines what is prohibited for safety-sensitive roles to ensure public safety, and state-issued medical ma*****na cards offer no protection against a positive federal drug test.

Regulatory Uncertainty: The main issue is a potential legal conflict, current HHS guidelines only authorize testing for Schedule I and II substances. If ma*****na moves to Schedule III without an explicit "carve-out" or a formal change in DOT regulations, the legal authority to test for it might be challenged.

However, the DOT leadership has committed to monitoring the situation and ensuring testing authority is preserved to maintain safety.

Off-Duty Use is Prohibited: Because the metabolites of THC can be detected in drug tests long after use, and the federal regulations prioritize public safety over personal choices, using ma*****na even during off-duty hours is prohibited for CDL holders.

In short, CDL holders should not use ma*****na and must continue to comply with all current federal drug testing requirements and prohibitions to maintain their commercial driving privileges.

Weather Advisory for Tuesday (3/18)!

UPDATE 6:15 am: It’s looking wet out there, and roads north of SLC have a little slush in places, but overall, things are pretty clear on state roads. Some areas got hit harder than others, but not as widespread. Please check the conditions in your area still!

Warmer ground temps and our pre-treatments are doing their job. You should be good to travel whenever this morning—just remember to pack your good driving skills and adjust for wet conditions.

------------------------------------------------------------
ORIGINAL: We are asking you to delay travel tomorrow (3/18) morning if possible. We’re expecting more snow, and the morning commute could be a bit tricky.

Please share to spread the word. 🤝

"Tomorrow morning’s commute could be a tricky one." Watch out for road conditions and check your weather and roads prior to driving tomorrow!

Reminder: Tomorrow morning’s commute could be a tricky one. ❄️🌧️ A few degrees could make all the difference between rain, slush, or snowy roads—so it’s best to be prepared.

Snow is moving in overnight, and by early Thursday morning, roads across Northern Utah could be slick—especially in canyons and on the benches. Mountain routes will take the biggest hit, plan for heavy snowfall and Traction Laws to be in effect.

Bottom line: Check the conditions in your area BEFORE you leave, give yourself extra time, and slow down. Please share with your family and friends who need to know!
