Booster seat-aged children are twice as likely to suffer serious injury or death in a car crash than younger children but a new study shows they may be less likely to have car seats inspected for proper use. Less than a quarter of car seat and booster checks analyzed in a recent study were conducted in children ages four and older.

What ideas do you have to promote older children to come to your events?

More evidence that checking seats is not safe. This was today in Seattle, and I took this picture myself. A luggage train went by, and two pieces of luggage and one carseat fell out onto the tarmac. He came back and gently picked up everything and placed it on his cart, but still, do we know now that this carseat will work as it should in a crash and save a child's life?

A cover or bag does not protect a carseat when it's checked. And it's out of your sight. Lots can happen between when you drop it off and when you pick it back up.

Those of us who have cat babies as well as human babies love seeing our cats being cute and adorable. We also know, though, the absolute stench of cat urine.

If you have a car seat in the house, store it upside down when it's in the house and not in use. Especially rear facing only seats, which tend to be perfectly cat sized, and may be the spot a cat who used to be baby #1 takes out their aggression on no longer being the main babe. If a cat urinates on your seat, you're not likely to be able to safely get the smell out, essentially ruining your seat. Store it so the cat can't sit in it, and then there's no worry.

Here's a great article about why we're all creatures of habit. It's not us, we really are, and it's our brains. We literally cannot help it. Parents who think they will never leave their kids in the car are more likely to have it happen to them because they don't take precautions.

For low tech solutions, put your bag, your left shoe, your phone, or anything you ARE in the habit of taking out of the car with you on the floor in the backseat. Then you'll need to go into the back to get it, and you'll see your baby. If you use a lightweight mirror for your rear facing child, make it a habit to check it when you remove your key from the car.

This is a great visual for why kids need boosters. Did you know the kids at greatest risk right now in the US are not the little ones? It's the 7-14 year olds who are moved out of the booster and to the front seat too soon.

We have a new travel booster in the house! I can't wait to try it out.

Don't forget to travel with seats for your children. Even booster aged kids need to have their seat safely transported, ideally bringing it into the cabin and storing it on board. That way it arrives, and arrives undamaged. If you can't fit it on board as it is, try removing the back of the booster (if possible) and putting it in the suitcase or overhead bin, and put the bottom of the booster somewhere else separate so they fit. If that won't work either, box the booster and check it, and have a back up plan in mind (where is the nearest store that will sell a booster at your destination?) just in case baggage handlers don't help it get to you at the other end.

If you have a trusted seat waiting for you, and you trust that person WILL be there to get you (weather, flight diversions, or even business meetings won't keep them away) then by the time a child is booster ready and sized, you could travel with nothing at all.

Certainly, if you're going someplace where you won't be using a car at all (NYC, Disney, London, etc.) now's the time when you can start not worrying about a seat at all for your trip.
