Here's a great article about why we're all creatures of habit. It's not us, we really are, and it's our brains. We literally cannot help it. Parents who think they will never leave their kids in the car are more likely to have it happen to them because they don't take precautions.
For low tech solutions, put your bag, your left shoe, your phone, or anything you ARE in the habit of taking out of the car with you on the floor in the backseat. Then you'll need to go into the back to get it, and you'll see your baby. If you use a lightweight mirror for your rear facing child, make it a habit to check it when you remove your key from the car.
