EXPEDITION 001: MORE SIDE QUESTS

At this point, we have no clue what day we’re on anymore. 😂

The plan had pretty much gone out the window, but one thing that wasn’t negotiable was catching up with our people.

We made our way to Rapid City Harley-Davidson to find Junthipa Pisessatorn and the Klock Werks crew.

OUR people.

We figured since we were already there…
Might as well go to Sturgis…

Missed the rally…By like a week. 🤣

Turns out having Sturgis and the Black Hills damn near to yourself isn’t a bad consolation prize.

We weren’t even planning on going through the Badlands. We’ve been plenty of times before.

But something told us to go.

So we went.

And wouldn’t you know it…

There was a flag waiting for us.

At this point, we weren’t even surprised anymore. The road has taken us exactly where we’re meant to be so far…

The itinerary was gone. The side quests had taken over. And somehow every time we listened to that little voice telling us to turn, go, stop or take the long way…

There was a reason.

Dinner was a milkshake, watching the sun go down, because road calories don’t count.

Pretty sure we’ve already established that.

Go see your people.

Take the long way.

Listen when something tells you to turn.

The road will figure out the rest.

EXPEDITION 001: THE SIDE QUEST

Dyersville, IA → Minneapolis, MN → Mitchell, SD

The plan was to leave Iowa and head straight to Mitchell to see the Klock Werks crew.

Then we saw the Welcome to Minnesota sign.

And immediately thought…
If we don’t turn and go see him, we’re going to regret it.

“Him” being a brother in arms we served with in Iraq and hadn’t seen in years.

He was about 215 miles in the wrong direction, so we made it the ONLY direction.

Sent him a picture of the Minnesota sign, and pointed the bike toward Minneapolis.

Best decision we could’ve made.

Funny enough, on the way to his house we spotted him sitting at a stoplight on his motorcycle. Pulled over, waited for him and got to ride the rest of the way together.

Some things just pick up right where they left off.

We grabbed lunch and a couple drinks at the oldest bar in Minnesota, caught up, reminisced and probably told some of the same stories we’ve been telling for years.

Worth every single extra mile.

Eventually we said our see-ya-laters and pointed the bike toward Mitchell.

Arrived at Klock Werks after they closed.

Didn’t stop us from climbing our happy asses into the giant red chair and taking pictures by ourselves. 😂

Hit the Corn Palace because… well, when the else are we going to see the Corn Palace?

Another state. Two flags retired. A whole bunch of extra miles. Absolutely destroyed the original plan for the day.

Wouldn’t change a damn thing.

This trip just kept reminding us:

Take the wrong turn. Make the extra miles. Go see your people.

Your destination will still be there.

EXPEDITION 001: CHICAGO

Well… we made it.

Route 66 complete.

We even got the opportunity to retire a flag at a pretty historic marker along the way before pointing the bike toward downtown Chicago.

Rode the waterfront. Took in the skyline. Ate an Italian beef. Deep dish. Gelato. Like five hot dogs.

All the things.

Expedition 001 calories don’t count. 😂

Then it was time for Wrigley.

We pulled the bike onto the sidewalk, up onto the bricks behind Wrigley Field and parked right next to Harry Caray.

Operations came out looking at us…

Told them we’d just ridden 2,800 miles to get there.

Turns out they were pretty fu***ng stoked about it.

So naturally…

“BASE!”

We even managed to spot a giraffe in its natural habitat. 🦒

Then we walked into an absolute madhouse.

40,000+ people. Sold out Wrigley. Catalina Club. Singing. Drinking. One hell of a back-and-forth baseball game.

Bottom of the 10th.

Tie game.

Pete Crow-Armstrong walks it off with a home run.

CUBS WIN.

Somewhere between Route 66, way too much food, a motorcycle parked on the bricks at Wrigley and 40,000 people losing their minds…

We forgot about everything else for a while.

No worrying about where we needed to be next.

We were just there.

Maybe that’s something we haven’t been doing enough of.

We spend a whole lot of time making a living and forget to actually live.

Chicago was a pretty damn good reminder.

EXPEDITION 001: DAYS 5–8/15

Sometimes you gotta stop moving.

It took us damn near 2,500 miles, but our first stop in Illinois was the most important one…

Hug Grandma.

From there, have a scotch with Mom.

We ripped through our old hometown, stopped by the historic Walters Brothers Harley-Davidson in Peoria, retired two more flags, spent some much needed time with family and did our absolute best to win enough money at the casino to buy Grandma a sidecar.

We did not win Grandma a sidecar. 😂

After days of heat, rain, long miles, replacing flags and meeting people everywhere we went, Days 5–8 weren’t really about the road.

We needed to stop.

Eat some food. Tell some stories. Hug our people. Have a drink. Lose some money. Sleep.

Just be home for a minute.

Because as much as Expedition 001 was about seeing where the road would take us, sometimes the road takes you exactly where you need to be.

For us, that was family.

Two more flags retired.

A few days with the people we love.

And a much needed reset before pointing the bike back toward the road.

Still owe Grandma that sidecar though…

EXPEDITION 001: DAY 4/15

Amarillo, TX → Springfield, MO

Route 66. Two flags. Good people. And chasing a sunset.

The mission for Day 4 was simple make our way to Joplin to visit our friends Frank and M e g h a n at Speed Dealer Customs

Along the way, we got the opportunity to meet up with our good buddy Mike Aldridge Dad, an Air Force veteran, who was very honored to help with our mission.

There’s something pretty damn special about crossing the country and having people willing to meet us along the way and become part of this thing.

It was an honor to shake his hand, spend some time with him and leave another new flag flying.

From there, we made our way to the House of Speed Joplin

We rolled in fully prepared to be curious little squirrels and ask them about everything in the building.

Instead, something pretty cool happened.

They wanted to hear our story too.

We walked through such a historic building, heard the history behind the House of Speed, and listened to Frank bring it all back to life through his stories.

We’ve watched what Frank has been building over the years, but getting to slow down and experience it with them was something completely different. It felt like we weren’t meant to be there.

We went there wanting to hear their story.

Turns out, they wanted to hear ours too.

Eventually, we had to point the bike toward Springfield.

Two flags retired. Route 66. Great people, amazing stories and a sunset worth chasing. Thanks for allowing us to be a part of your world.

Just one solid day on the road.

EXPEDITION 001: DAY 3/15

Gallup, NM → Amarillo, TX

The day where the trip shifted…

We decided to be tourists and stopped at Cadillac Ranch. Honestly, not sure what we expected…

It’s a bunch of cars in the ground. 😂

While there, we offered to take a family photo for some strangers. They politely declined, but as we were leaving, one of them stopped us.

She asked if we knew about Navajo gemstones and handed us a small bear with turquoise eyes.

“Because you were so kind.”

We were speechless.

From there we headed toward our first Buc-ee’s. Even though it was right off the highway, the GPS sent us down some random-ass back road.

I literally looked down and said:

“Are we headed to a flag?”

A few minutes later we hit a four-way stop.

Directly in front of us was an American flag desperately needing to be retired.

There it freaking was.

Maybe coincidence. Maybe not.

Then we got to Amarillo.

There was a torn flag outside the hotel, but no way to reach it. Maintenance said they’d handle it in the morning.

Nah. That flag was coming down tonight.

So I’m sitting outside staring at it when some kid pulls up in a lifted black truck.

I looked at him and said:

“Question for you…how would you like to commit a crime with me tonight?”

Without missing a beat:

“What kind of crime are we talking about?”

Our kinda people. 😂

He backed his truck underneath the flagpole, we climbed in the bed, and that flag came down.

That little bear went on the bike and stayed with us for the rest of Expedition 001.

Wrong turns. Random stops. Complete strangers willing to commit minor crimes.

Somehow, we just kept ending up exactly where we needed to be.

Call it whatever you want. We just kept riding to where we were meant to be.

EXPEDITION 001: DAY 2/15

Kingman, AZ → Gallup, NM.

Day two started before we even really got started.

Walking out of the motel that morning, we noticed a flag across the street that had seen better days. That first flag gave us the opportunity to meet an Air Force veteran, shake her hand, hear a little of her story, and leave a new flag flying where an old one had served its time..

And that pretty much set the tone for the rest of the day.

Four flags replaced.

Long-ass miles through some absolutely brutal heat. Twin Arrows. Navajo land. And then getting absolutely hammered by rain heading into Flagstaff.

We also learned that not everybody was going to understand what we were doing.

One shop owner made it pretty clear they didn’t want us replacing their worn-out flags.

We made it pretty clear they were welcome to call the police.

The flags went up.

We get asked all the time, “Why do it for someone like that..?”

Because it’s about what this flag represents and the freedom it holds.. not the person flying it..

But looking back, that’s what I’m grateful for about Day 2.

We stopped being people riding around with a bunch of flags strapped to a motorcycle and started actually engaging with the communities we were riding through.

We met people. We heard stories. We shook hands. We occasionally pi**ed somebody off.

And we left four American flags flying a little prouder than we found them.

Not a bad day’s work.
