Scenes from the pits at the first SCCA Trans-Am event, at Sebring, Florida, March 25, 1966.
Technically, these “Trans-American” cars were running in the four-hour Governor’s Cup Race for Sedans at Sebring International Raceway.
Two classes existed in the series, FIA Group I and II sedans over two liters, and those under two liters in engine displacement. 44 cars total started the event.
Though not featured in the photos above, Jochen Rindt drove an Alfa Romeo 1600GTA to the overall (and class) win, even after he had rolled the same car in practice. Bob Tullius would finish second in a Dodge Dart (first in the over 2 liter class).
