A Tesla Model 3 driver in Chengdu, China walked away completely unhurt after a violent crash that sent the car flipping through the air before it slammed back down onto other vehicles. According to the report, the female driver mistook the brake for the accelerator, a well documented form of pedal misapplication, which sent the Model 3 into multiple parked cars and launched it airborne, flipping several times before it landed.

Despite the severity of the wreck, with the Tesla left heavily crushed and resting on top of a sedan, the driver emerged without serious injury, a result that points to the strength of the Model 3's rigid body structure and crumple zones.

Tesla vehicles have consistently posted strong crash safety results, and the Model 3 in particular has earned top tier ratings for occupant protection in independent testing. The incident is a reminder that while no car can prevent driver error, the way a vehicle absorbs and distributes crash forces is what decides whether a frightening accident becomes a serious one, and in this case the structure did its job.
