Why the Same Size Dent Doesn’t Cost the Same: What’s Behind Your Panel Changes Everything

Most people want a straight price and a lot of shops will give you one. Here’s what that actually means.

When a shop quotes you an exact number without seeing what’s behind the panel they are either guessing or they’ve done this so many times at that price they aren’t about to change it, even if the repair demands more. That leads to one of two things. They reprice you after the fact and you feel blindsided. Or they keep the price and cut corners on the repair to protect their margin.

Neither one is acceptable.

At Dent Time we’ve been doing this for 35 years. We know what’s behind panels. We know what sound deadener, body lines, braces and impact beams do to a repair. That knowledge is exactly why we give ranges not flat numbers and on more complex jobs we give our clients options so they can decide what standard of repair fits their situation.

A shop that quotes everything the same hasn’t looked close enough. Or they have and they just don’t care.

Before shopping for the cheapest repair, understand that no technician can accurately price a dent without knowing what’s behind the panel. Braces, reinforcements, double metal, wiring, and limited access can completely change the repair strategy, time, and overall complexity.

That’s why extremely low quotes over text or photos often lead to one of two things: a subpar result, or the price changes once the technician arrives and properly inspects the vehicle.

At Dent Time, we believe in full transparency from the beginning. Every text, photo, or remote estimate is a preliminary cost range based only on the visible damage. Final pricing is confirmed after the vehicle is properly inspected either at your location through our mobile service throughout San Diego County, or at our premier PDR shop in Escondido.

LIVE: Anson Compact Series PDR Tool Review + Training Q&A

What This Live Is Really About
Most tool reviews online are surface level. Somebody holds a tool up, says it feels good, and moves on. That is not a review. That is an unboxing.
This is different.

You are going to watch a technician who has spent three and a half decades behind the rod walk through the latest Anson Compact Series, the new handle design, and the full range of bends, tips, and shaves that Anson has quietly been refining for the hardest access situations in the trade. If you have ever stared at a brace, a roof rail, or a tight quarter panel and thought there has to be a better way in, this is the live for you.

The handle is worth paying attention to. The grip and feel is something you can only understand once it is in your hand, and I am going to explain why that matters for long days, fatigue, and control on glue pulls and braced pushes.

The Tools We Are Covering

Series rods — length, balance, and why compact is not a compromise
The new Anson handle — grip geometry, feedback through the shaft, and fatigue reduction
Bend variations — why the right bend turns a two hour dent into a twenty minute dent
Tip selection — sharp, round, flat, and the logic for each
Shave series — the access tools that open up panels most techs avoid

Official tool source: https://ansonpdr.com

The Training Q&A
After the tool walkthrough, I am opening the floor. These are the questions I hear every single week from new and intermediate technicians, and I am answering all of them on camera.

"What tools should I buy first?"
The honest answer is not what most people expect. Buying the biggest kit you can find is how you end up with a drawer full of rods you never touch. I will show you the small set that covers 80 percent of real world work.

"What kit should I start with?"
There is a difference between a learning kit and a working kit. Confusing the two costs you months.

"How should I practice?"
Practice without structure is just repetition of bad habits. I will walk you through the progression I put students through at Dent Time.

"Can I learn PDR by myself?"
Yes and no. I will tell you exactly what you can learn alone, what you cannot, and what the self taught path actually costs you in time and money.

"What should I avoid doing early on?"
The five mistakes that take new techs the longest to unlearn.

Why Listen to This Review?
There are plenty of people selling courses and pushing tools online. Very few of them have been repairing dents since 1991. Fewer still have trained the technicians who now own shops and mobile PDR companies across the country.

When I review a tool, I am not telling you whether it is nice. I am telling you whether it earns a place in a working professional's bag. That is a different standard, and it is the only one that matters if this is your livelihood.

📖 BMW High Spot Repair: When "Impossible" Just Needs the Right Technique

The Truth About Paintless Dent Repair on Damaged Paint.

There is a myth I hear constantly in this industry. It goes something like this. If the paint is damaged, paintless dent repair is not an option. You just have to repaint.

I want to clear this up because it costs people money every single day.

Yes, paintless dent repair works best when the paint is intact. That part is true. But damaged paint does not automatically mean PDR is off the table. What matters is the type of damage, the location, and what you are trying to achieve.

Here is a scenario I see all the time. A BMW owner gets a hood dent. The impact chips the paint at the center. Around that chip, there are high spots and distortion in the metal. A body shop looks at it and quotes three thousand dollars for a new hood, paint, and blending into the fenders. The owner assumes that is the only path forward.

But here is what they are missing. The paint damage is localized. The structural issue is the metal distortion. If you can fix the metal, you have options. You could touch up the paint chip. You could polish the area. You could even leave it as is if it is small enough. The point is, you are not forced into a full repaint just because the paint took a hit.

I recently completed a repair on a BMW M5 that perfectly illustrates this. The hood had significant paint damage from the initial impact. Multiple high spots surrounded the damaged area. The owner had been told replacement was the only answer.

We approached it differently. Using advanced PDR techniques, we worked the high spots back to level. We released the tension in the metal. We restored the panel's geometry without adding body filler or cutting into the factory finish. The paint damage remained, but it went from a glaring problem to a minor touch up.

Is it perfect? No. But perfect is not always the goal. Sometimes the goal is preserving what matters. Factory paint has value. Factory panels have value. When you replace a hood, you lose both.

The full story of this repair is documented on our blog with detailed photos showing each stage of the process. If you are facing a similar situation, I recommend taking a look before you make any decisions.

Why I Don't Sell the Dream

I could tell you what you want to hear.

"Become a PDR pro in one week!"
"Make $10K your first month!"
"Anyone can do this!"

That's what sells. That's what fills classes.

But I won't say it. Because it's not true.

Here's what is true:

After 35 years training techs from Taiwan to Colombia to Greece, the pattern never changes. The ones who succeed aren't the naturals. They're the ones who understood what they were getting into.

The awkward phase: Your hands don't work. Your eyes see things your brain can't process. You question everything.

The grind: Months 3-6. Every dent fights you. You fix one, create two new problems. You want to quit.

The breakthrough: Month 6-12. Suddenly you see it. The metal starts listening. Money starts flowing.

That's the real timeline.

Not 5 days. Not 2 weeks. Months of practice after training ends.

So why train at all?

Because without it, you're looking at 3-4 years of trial and error. With good training, you compress that to 12-18 months.

That's the math. That's the reality.

I wrote the full breakdown, what happens week by week, why the grind phase breaks people, how to push through, and what "competent" actually looks like.

If you want the fantasy, there are plenty of schools selling it.

If you want the truth, read this:

Techs — be honest: When did you stop feeling like a fraud? When did you actually trust your own work?

Newbies need to hear it.

Can a Dent Be Repaired on a Porsche Without Repainting?

Yes! When a Porsche gets dented, the biggest concern is not just removing the damage. It is preserving the factory paint and the integrity of the panel. At Dent Time, we specialize in paintless dent repair for high end vehicles, using controlled techniques designed to protect original finishes.

For this Porsche repair, we used a precision line board reflection to clearly read the metal and guide every step of the process. Before any glue pulling was done, the paint was measured with a paint gauge to confirm it had not been repainted and was safe for the repair method. This step is critical and often skipped by less experienced shops.

Because backside access was limited, a combination of cold glue and hot glue techniques was used to safely release tension and restore the panel shape. The final stage involved careful knockdown work to level the surface and refine the finish. The entire repair took just over an hour and was completed without repainting.

Dent Time provides professional paintless dent repair throughout San Diego County, including Escondido, San Marcos, Carlsbad, Encinitas, and surrounding North County areas. Our focus is quality, transparency, and repairs done with intention rather than shortcuts.

FAQs:

Can paintless dent repair be done on a Porsche without repainting
Yes, as long as the factory paint is intact and the panel has not been previously repainted. We always verify this with a paint gauge before starting any Porsche dent repair.

Is glue pulling safe for Porsche vehicles
When performed correctly and on original paint, glue pulling is a safe and effective method. We use controlled cold and hot glue techniques based on access, panel design, and metal tension.

How long does Porsche paintless dent repair take
Most Porsche paintless dent repairs take between one to three hours, depending on dent size, location, and access. More complex repairs may take longer, but every job is evaluated carefully before starting.

PDR Training: How To Finish Sharp Dents Clean with Compact Door Lord

The Compact Door Lord is thinner and sharper than a standard rod, which makes it especially effective for pushing sharp center pits with control. While it can be used on many types of dents, it really stands out in tight access situations where larger tools struggle. Its slim profile allows it to slide down narrow window openings, fit between tight impact beams, and work around sound deadening without fighting the panel or surrounding structures.

Where the Compact Door Lord really earns its place is during finishing. The sharper tip and increased precision make it ideal for cleaning up the last part of a dent without over pushing. This allows for controlled pressure and cleaner metal movement when the dent is already close to finished.

The new compact handle pairs with the smaller hub designed specifically for the Compact Door Lord. This setup improves balance, control, and feedback in the hand, making fine pushes more deliberate and reducing unnecessary movement. The result is better precision in tight spaces and a cleaner finish without adding noise or extra steps to the repair.
