The Spartan has become a bit of a tradition around here.
Whenever I reach the point where I feel like I’ve really gotten a new process dialed in, I make a Spartan.
It started as a nod to my hometown and the Baker Spartans, but over time these projects have turned into markers of progress for Mad Dog Metalworks.
Plasma cutting.
Laser engraving.
Deep engraving and 3D relief work.
Combining different machines and processes into one finished piece.
Each Spartan in these photos represents a different stage of learning—hours of testing settings, scrapping pieces, changing artwork, adjusting machines, and figuring out how to make the next one better than the last.
The big plasma-cut Spartan was one of those early milestones. The engraved Spartan coin became another when I started getting serious depth and detail out of the fiber laser. Now I’m pushing the laser work further again with more complex artwork and engraving techniques.
I like being able to look back at these because they show something that’s easy to forget when you're constantly working on the next project: progress.
And I’m definitely not finished adding Spartans to the collection.

This weekend at Mad Dog Metalworks was all about dialing things in.
A lot of shop time went into testing, learning, and fine-tuning the capabilities of the new fiber laser—and figuring out how to combine it with what we can already do on the CNC plasma table.
The Longhorn bottle opener is a good example: plasma cut from steel, cleaned up, then brought over to the laser to add detailed artwork directly to the finished piece. Being able to combine both machines opens up a whole new level of detail and customization for our metalwork.
On the laser side, we’ve also been working on perfecting true 3D engraving. This Spartan was engraved into a solid brass coin, with the laser actually removing material at different depths to create the raised and recessed detail you see in the finished piece.
There’s been a lot of testing behind the scenes—different speeds, power levels, frequencies, pulse settings, materials and finishing techniques—but the results are getting better with every project.
And we're just getting started.

A few new things happening at Mad Dog Metalworks… 🔥
The shop has been pretty busy lately, and I wanted to share some of what I’ve been working on.
I recently added a 100W MOPA fiber laser, which opens up a whole new side of what I can offer. I can now do detailed engraving and marking on metals, personalized items, stainless business cards, tags, coins, promotional products and a whole lot more.
At the same time, the plasma and fabrication side of the shop isn’t slowing down. I’m still building custom steel signs, wall art, personalized pieces and fabricated products from real steel — cut, cleaned, welded and finished right here in the shop.
What I’m really excited about is being able to combine the two processes. Plasma lets me build the larger steel pieces, while the fiber laser gives me the ability to add fine detail, logos, names, dates and personalization that simply wasn’t possible before.
So if you’ve got an idea — whether it’s a custom piece for your home, something for the shop or garage, a personalized gift, or branded products for your business — send it my way. I’m always interested in seeing what we can turn into metal.
And I’ve got quite a few new products and designs coming out of the shop that I’ll be sharing soon.
Real steel. Real craftsmanship. Made right here in San Angelo.

🔥 NEW CAPABILITIES AT MAD DOG METALWORKS 🔥

We’ve added a new 100W MOPA fiber laser to the shop, and after putting it through its paces on several projects, I’m ready to start offering a whole new range of custom engraving and personalized products.

This isn’t just surface marking. This machine gives me the ability to produce extremely fine detail, permanent markings, and even deep engraving into metal.

Some of the new possibilities include:

• Custom metal business cards
• Business logos and promotional items
• Stainless steel tags and keychains
• Deep engraved steel and stainless parts
• Personalized tumblers
• Slate coasters
• Brass challenge coins and keepsakes
• Serialized parts, equipment tags, QR codes and identification plates
• Custom gifts and one-off pieces
• Engraving integrated directly into Mad Dog Metalworks fabricated products

One of the things I’m most excited about is being able to combine the laser with the plasma table and fabrication side of the shop. Instead of simply cutting and painting a piece, I can now add detailed logos, text, artwork, personalization and permanent identification directly into the finished product.

For local businesses, this also opens up a lot of possibilities for branded products, customer gifts, employee awards, promotional pieces, equipment identification and custom metal business cards.

I’ve included some photos and video of the first projects coming off the machine so you can see what it can do.

And I’m just getting started.

If you have an idea for something you’d like engraved—or something you’re not even sure can be made—send Mad Dog Metalworks a message. I’m always interested in trying something new.

This one took some time to get right, but I’m proud of where the design ended up.
This is the final prototype of my Mad Dog XL Charcoal Chimney, built from heavy-duty 14-gauge steel and designed from the ground up rather than copied from a store-bought chimney.
The pentagonal body is cut as one piece, hand-formed, and assembled with precision tabs and recesses. The closing seam now fits nearly flush, and the internal grate is designed with only about .020–.030 inch of working clearance around the walls. The grate tabs pass through matching slots and are welded from the inside, leaving the exterior clean without long weld seams or unnecessary grinding.
Some of the details I worked through:
Precision-fit tab and slot construction
Internally welded, self-locating charcoal grate
Large airflow openings through the body and grate
Heavy 1/2-inch steel handle with a spring grip
XL charcoal capacity
Customizable panels for names, logos, brands, or graphics
Minimal exterior welding and cleanup
It may look like a simple charcoal chimney, but a lot of measuring, cutting, testing, bending, and small tolerance adjustments went into making all five sides come together properly.
The next step is loading it with charcoal and putting the airflow and capacity to the test.
Designed and built by Mad Dog Metalworks. Built heavy, built clean, and built to be used.

Made something special for America’s 250th Birthday. 🇺🇸
This large custom Fourth of July sign was built for James Burns’ annual Independence Day display.
It features an eagle, patriotic details, and 1776–2026 to mark 250 years of America. Cut from steel here at Mad Dog Metalworks and finished in a durable textured granite coating built to hold up outdoors.
Proud to have one of my pieces included in a display that brings the community together to celebrate Independence Day.
I’ll post a final photo once it is installed in the full display.

Some projects mean a little more than others.

For the past several months, I've had the privilege of building one of these Battlefield Crosses every month for a retired Marine here in San Angelo named James Burns.

If you've never heard of James, he has dedicated a portion of his yard to honoring America's fallen heroes. Month after month, he adds another Battlefield Cross to his memorial—not because he knew these men and women personally, but because he believes every one of them deserves to be remembered.

This month's cross honors PVT Ernest Burns, who gave his life in service to our country.

As a veteran myself, it's difficult to describe what it means to know something built in my little garage becomes part of a tribute like this. These aren't just another metal art project to me. Each one represents a life of service, sacrifice, and a family forever changed.

James, thank you for trusting me to build these each month. Your dedication to honoring our nation's heroes is inspiring, and I'm grateful to play a small part in helping ensure their memory lives on.

If you have a few minutes, I've attached a news story about James and the memorial he's built. Take the time to watch it. I think you'll understand why it's such an honor for me to build these.

Patriotism isn't always about grand gestures. Sometimes it's simply making sure the names of our fallen heroes continue to be spoken.

May we never forget those who gave everything so the rest of us could live free.

God bless our fallen heroes, their families, and the United States of America.

Spent a little time in the shop this week working on something new.

I got tired of seeing those flimsy burger presses that flex the first time you lean on them, so I figured I'd build one the way I thought it should be built.

Meet The Texas Press.

Made from 1/4" steel and weighing in at just over 3½ pounds, it's built to make the perfect smash burger without bending, flexing, or wearing out. The cool-touch spring handle keeps your hand comfortable, and the weight does most of the work for you.

I build everything here in my garage in San Angelo, one piece at a time. I enjoy creating products that are overbuilt, useful, and made to last a lifetime—not something you'll replace next summer.

I may make a small batch of these if there's enough interest.

What do you think? Anything you'd add before I call this one finished?

01/11/2026

Proud of this one. I just finished this 3D, two-layer metal piece with fully customizable Govee LED backlighting—built as a university acceptance gift for a family member.
This is the kind of work I love doing. If you’ve got an idea you want brought to life in metal, send it my way—I’d be happy to make it happen.
