Emergency Vehicle Warning Sign

This sign warns drivers that emergency vehicles may be entering the roadway ahead. Fire stations, ambulance bays and other emergency response facilities often use these signs to remind drivers to stay alert for vehicles responding to calls.

One mistake I see is drivers focusing only on what’s directly in front of them. When you see this sign, keep your eyes and ears open. Emergency vehicles may enter traffic quickly and need room to respond safely.

Speed Limit Signs

Speed limit signs tell drivers the maximum legal speed under ideal conditions. If the speed limit increases, don’t accelerate until you reach the sign. If the speed limit decreases, you should already be at the lower speed when you reach the sign.

One mistake I see all the time is drivers speeding up before a higher speed limit sign or waiting until after a lower speed limit sign to slow down. The speed limit doesn’t start before the sign, and it doesn’t start after the sign. It starts at the sign.

Which do you see more often: drivers speeding up too early or slowing down too late?

It’s getting warm outside and that means more pedestrians. Yield to pedestrians on crosswalks. Marked or unmarked. These mid-block crosswalks connecting the alleys are places you should be yielding.

Update on this intersection from ODOT. You have to stop when you are turning right from the middle lane on the red light. Even when the far right lane has a green arrow.

Bicycle Railroad Crossing Warning Sign

This warning sign alerts bicyclists that railroad tracks cross the roadway at an angle. At these locations, bicycle tires can get caught in the rail gap, causing the rider to lose control and crash. To cross safely, bicyclists may need to move farther into the lane before crossing the tracks.

One thing many drivers don’t realize is that bicyclists usually aren’t moving into the lane to slow traffic down. In many locations, the shoulder is too narrow, uneven, or covered in gravel to safely cross the tracks. Sometimes the safest option is to use more of the roadway.

More people ask me about this intersection than any other in the Salem-Keizer area.

The intersection of Tryon Avenue NE and Liberty Road NE confuses a lot of drivers because it feels like this left turn shouldn’t be legal. But in Oregon, it is.

Even though you’re turning from a two-way street, you can legally turn left onto Liberty Road NE because it’s a one-way street. It also doesn’t matter that the traffic signal uses red arrows instead of circular red lights. Oregon law still allows that left turn after coming to a complete stop and yielding to any traffic, pedestrians, or bicyclists that have the right of way.

Advisory Speed Signs

Advisory speed signs are the yellow signs posted before curves. Unlike a speed limit sign, these signs provide a recommended speed to help drivers safely navigate the curve ahead. The speeds are calculated by traffic engineers based on the characteristics of the curve.

One mistake I see is drivers treating these signs like a challenge instead of a recommendation. These speeds assume good conditions. If the road is wet, icy, covered in debris, or visibility is reduced, you may need to take the curve even slower.
