Is this your first time hearing this?

This is one of the most misunderstood road rules out there. In Oregon, when drivers are making a right turn, are not supposed drive through the bike lane before turning. A lot of drivers were taught differently, which is why this causes so much confusion and close calls.

Bike lanes only work if bikes can actually use them.

When cars stop, park, or wait in bike lanes, cyclists are forced into traffic, around vehicles, or into unsafe situations they shouldn’t have to deal with.

A lot of drivers get frustrated when bicyclists don’t perfectly follow every rule. But there are also plenty of situations where cars make it almost impossible for cyclists to safely use the road the way they’re supposed to.

Drivers, have you ever been surprised by a bicyclist moving into your lane because the bike lane was blocked?

If you’re turning left at an unprotected left turn, don’t creep into the crosswalk to wait.

The safest place to wait is behind the crosswalk until you can complete the turn all the way through the intersection. When drivers pull forward into the crosswalk, they put themselves in a worse position as the light changes. Now you’re blocking pedestrians, possibly blocking traffic, and if the light turns red before you clear the intersection, you’ve just completed the turn on a red light.

A lot of drivers think pulling forward is “normal,” but normal doesn’t always mean safe or legal.

Each citation comes with a photo and some states include a video of your vehicle. If it’s not your vehicle it should be easy to dispute. Possibly the camera read the license plate incorrectly and sent the info to the wrong person. If it wasn’t you driving your car, you can defer the ticket to the driver.

Two of the citations were issued seven minutes apart on Feb. 24. The driver says she never left her home that day.

Should every state pass a law like this?

A proposed Missouri bill would require drunk drivers who kill a parent to pay child support for the victim’s children. The idea is to hold impaired drivers financially accountable long after the crash, not just through criminal charges.
