In Oregon I see this mistake every day:
People turning for the bike lane.
You should clear the bike lane before you start your right turn.

This is not the rule is all states, but best practice would not have cars drive in the bike lane.

This intersection has two clear instructions:
Stop at the line.
No turn on red.

Ignoring either one puts pedestrians and yourself at risk. ignoring both is even worse.
Reading the signs matters.

The new turn lanes coming out of the Salem Costco roundabout onto Kuebler Blvd were causing some confusion last week, but the city has added a dashed line!

If you’re turning right from the left turn lane, stay in the left lane as you complete your turn. Don’t drift across into the right lane.

Turn into your lane. Don’t change lanes in the middle of the turn. Stay on your side of the dash line.

Pay attention. Prevent crashes.
Read signs. Follow signs.
It’s pretty simple.

Construction zones can get a little confusing when the normal traffic controls don’t apply.

When flaggers are controlling an intersection, follow their directions. In this case, that means I can continue through the flashing red light when the flagger tells me to go. You’ll even notice the stop signs are covered.

Still slow down, watch for pedestrians, and pay attention to everything happening around you.

And be nice to the construction workers! They’re standing in traffic trying to keep everyone safe and keep things moving.

Most of the time there may not be another car next to you, but I’ve already heard about near misses here.

Turn into your lane. Don’t change lanes in the middle of the turn.

📍 McLeod Ln & Chemawa Rd in Keizer

This is a busy unmarked crosswalk that a lot of kids use to get to and from school.

Even without painted lines, this is still a crosswalk. In Oregon, drivers are required to stop and yield to pedestrians at marked and unmarked crosswalks.

We did a crosswalk audit here to see how drivers responded to people trying to cross and to bring some attention to a crossing that gets a lot of use from students.

Slow down, pay attention, and remember: no painted lines doesn’t mean no crosswalk.

Here’s a follow up to yesterday’s video:

A lot of people asked how I knew those cars were parking in a bike lane and weren’t just parked on the shoulder. The bike symbol painted on the road was the biggest clue. I also recognized that the white line was wider than a typical edge line. With that combination I can could identify it was indeed a bike lane.

In Oregon there is a usually a difference between the two line widths. It’s best to learn your lines just like you learn your signs.
