The “Summer Sucks Grass Drags” were started in July 2010 by the St. Joe Snow Rider’s snowmobiling club to honor one of their members, TJ Grieser, who was killed in an avalanche while riding on March 27, 2010. He was 29 years old and left behind a wife and unborn child. TJ had grass dragged in the Coeur d’Alene races in previous years and always wanted to start a local event. Since high school, TJ
had coined the saying “Summer Sucks” and had made stickers that he posted all over everything he owned. Thousands of stickers with his favorite saying were passed out at his memorial service. The club thought the saying was perfect to represent sleds zipping along grass on a hot July day! The race also served as an impromptu memorial for TJ’s friends and family, and the pits and stands were packed. The subsequent annual races were just as successful. Joe Snow Riders are a public service club and hold fundraisers through out the year. Their contributions have benefited endless local charities. This year’s event is also expected to be a success with all proceeds going to local charity. The goal is to make the race bigger, better, and more profitable every year. Pre registration is Friday night, but you can sign up until race time Saturday morning. We have many different classes…everything from kids to modified turbos. We have women’s and men’s classes, Jack and Jill races, and even some grudge matches! Saturday is all about serious racing, while Sunday is finishing up brackets and competing for the King of the Grass (an overall champion based on races by the winners of each bracket). Sunday also brings some fun, non competitive action…like a gentleman racing on a motorcycle with his dog on the back or a set of guys racing their sleds…in reverse! We encourage beginners. Many of our racers have never rode a snowmobile before they hit the launch pad! Our club members constructed a “dunk tank” to ride the sleds through to cool them off. Racing won’t hurt your sled…we will help keep your sled running safely. We are working on expanding our advertising campaign. We are hoping you will be interested in not only participating in our fun event, but also helping to spread the word. We appreciate any publicity you can bring to this event. In addition, the St. Joe Snow Riders host multiple poker rides and fun runs during the winter. If you have any questions, or would like printed materials, please contact one of our members. Joe Snowriders Club also has a page. Thank you and remember…”When in doubt, throttle out!”
