Once the price of a fire engine crosses $1 million, something strange happens: $50,000, $100,000 or even $300,000 can start to look like just another number on an options list.

That isn’t because committees don’t care about the money. Numbers that large simply become difficult to put into perspective.

Not that long ago, if a $500,000 fire engine grew into an $800,000 fire engine, everyone in the room would have stopped and questioned how it happened. Today, that same $300,000 can disappear between $1 million and $1.3 million without feeling nearly as dramatic.

This campaign was never meant to preach or tell departments they shouldn’t customize their apparatus. Fully custom fire apparatus design remains one of SST’s specialties, and we want every department to have the equipment it truly needs.

But $300,000 is still $300,000.

It could help purchase another emergency vehicle. It could provide new gear for your crew, replace aging equipment, make improvements to the firehouse or remain available for the next unexpected need.

At SST, we’re firemen too. We understand that an apparatus committee isn’t just responsible for designing a great fire engine—it is also responsible for protecting the department’s overall mission and budget.

The SST Job Series isn’t about settling for less. It’s about making deliberate choices, simplifying the specification and preserving the Seagrave strength, safety and craftsmanship that matter most.

If every dollar were one second, $300,000 would equal 3 days, 11 hours and 20 minutes.

That’s a lot of time—and it is still a lot of money.

Before it disappears into an options list, ask what else it could accomplish for your department.

This isn’t a hypothetical example or a made-up marketing number.

We took a custom Seagrave pumper specification we developed for one of our customers—originally priced at $1,354,000—and compared it line by line with an SST Premier Job Series configuration priced at $1,050,000.

That’s a potential difference of $304,000.

Both configurations are Seagrave pumpers designed around the same fundamental mission. Both preserve Seagrave’s commitment to safety, strength and craftsmanship. Both carry water, hose and firefighting equipment, pump 1,500 GPM and seat four firemen. The difference is in how each one is specified.

This comparison isn’t meant to say that customization is bad or that every option is unnecessary. It shows how decisions involving the cab and chassis, driveline, plumbing and discharges, warning packages, body size, storage configuration and other options can affect the final price.

Every option has a purpose. Our job is to help your committee decide whether it serves yours.

If you would like to see the complete, anonymized, real-world comparison behind this ad, message us here or email [email protected]. We’ll gladly walk you through the numbers and show you exactly where the difference came from.
