These structures are charcoal kilns that were built in 1886 by mining companies to turn timber into charcoal for a fuel source at the local mines. If you know much about firewood, in just a few years these kilns(once 16 or 17 of them) processed 150,000 cords of wood into charcoal. @ Birch Creek Charcoal Kilns

In the last 3 days I camped on the beach, road sand dunes on my dirtbike, drove through white out conditions, 4 states, elevations between -180 feet and 6000+ feet, hiked through sand dunes, saw old mining towns and a ww2/race car museum. @ Estrella Warbird Museum
