The Bizzarrini 5300GT is a rare and iconic Italian sports car produced from 1964 to 1968. It was the most successful creation of engineer Giotto Bizzarrini, who had previously worked on the Ferrari 250 GTO and helped develop the Lamborghini V12 engine.

The car was built with a racing pedigree, originating from a disagreement with Iso over the Iso Grifo A3/C. It features an exceptionally low-slung, aerodynamic body, often in lightweight aluminum or fiberglass. Crucially, it used an American-sourced 5.3-liter Chevrolet 327ci V8 engine, mounted far back in a front-mid-engine layout for optimal weight distribution.

The road-going version, the GT Strada, offered high performance, while the GT Corsa competition model won its class at the 1965 24 Hours of Le Mans. Only around 133 examples were produced, making it a highly coveted classic today.

The 1963 Chrysler Turbine Car was an ambitious experimental vehicle designed to test gas turbine engines for everyday use. Hand-built in Italy by Ghia and finished in a signature metallic root b**r color, only 55 units were produced. Chrysler loaned 50 of these cars to over 200 regular American households for real-world testing between 1963 and 1966.

The engine produced 130 horsepower and an impressive 425 pound-feet of torque. It ran at an astounding idle speed of 18,000 to 22,000 rpm, creating a distinctive sound like a jet engine or vacuum cleaner. A key advantage was its ability to run on virtually any combustible liquid, including diesel, kerosene, unleaded gasoline, tequila, and even perfume.

Despite smooth operation and low maintenance, the car suffered from slow throttle response, high fuel consumption in city driving, and expensive manufacturing costs. Most were crushed to avoid import duties after the trial, leaving only nine surviving models today.

KITT, or Knight Industries Two Thousand, is the iconic talking car from the 1980s television series *Knight Rider*. The vehicle was a highly modified 1982 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am. It was equipped with an advanced, self-aware artificial intelligence, voiced by William Daniels, who served as partner to the driver, Michael Knight.

KITT's black exterior featured the distinctive red scanner bar on its nose, known as the Anamorphic Equalizer. The car's fictional features included a molecular-bonded shell for near-indestructibility, an eight-speed microprocessor-controlled turbo-drive, and an array of sophisticated gadgets. Among its most famous abilities were "Turbo Boost," allowing it to jump over obstacles, and an electronic jamming system. KITT's core programming mandated the protection of human life. The car's combination of futuristic technology and a witty personality made it a legendary figure in pop culture.

The 1977 Volkswagen Type 2 Microbus, affectionately nicknamed "Azul," gained viral attention after surviving the devastating Palisades Fire in Malibu. An Associated Press photograph captured the blue and white bus seemingly untouched amidst the charred ruins of a neighborhood, turning it into a symbol of resilience and hope.

Its owner, Megan Weinraub, had left the vehicle, believing it would be destroyed, but was stunned by its survival. Upon seeing the story, Volkswagen of America offered to fully restore the vehicle. Technicians at their historic vehicle facility dedicated over 2,000 hours to repair smoke damage, blistered paint, and replace more than 900 parts, including a melted turn signal cover and shattered glass. The fully restored "Magic Bus" was later revealed to the public at the LA Auto Show.

Miles Davis viewed high-performance cars as an extension of his creative identity. After signing with Columbia Records, he bought a blue 1957 Mercedes-Benz 190SL, which was followed by a Jaguar XK140.
Davis was especially known for his affinity for Italian engineering. Over the years, he owned several Ferraris, including a white 250GT a Spyder California, a Berlinetta Lusso, and a red 275 GTB/4. However, his most famous vehicle was a lime-green Lamborghini Miura. In 1972, he famously crashed the Miura on Manhattan’s West Side Highway. The accident broke both of his ankles and resulted in a temporary hiatus from his musical career.
Even after the crash, his passion for speed remained. In the 1980s, he was often seen in a bright yellow Ferrari 308 GTS or a Testarossa. These cars symbolized the same speed, precision, and modernism that defined his legendary music.

The Mercedes G-Wagen began as a rugged military project in the early 1970s, commissioned by the Shah of Iran. Developed by Mercedes-Benz and Steyr-Daimler-Puch, it was designed for extreme utility and durability. When the civilian version launched in 1979, it was a spartan workhorse with manual windows and cloth seats, valued more for its triple-locking differentials than its comfort.

Through the 1990s and 2000s, the vehicle underwent a radical shift, transforming into a luxury icon while retaining its boxy, aerodynamic-defying silhouette. It became a status symbol of excess and exclusivity. Today, the evolution reaches its peak with wild adaptations from high-end tuners. Brabus, for example, transforms the G-Class into a carbon-fiber-clad beast like the 800 Widestar. These versions can push 800 horsepower, feature opulent, bespoke interiors, and utilize portal axles for massive ground clearance. What started as a simple tool for soldiers has evolved into a high-performance, ultra-luxury vehicle for the elite.

The Wienie 500 is a lighthearted novelty race held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway during Miller Lite Carb Day, the final practice day before the Indianapolis 500.
The event features the entire fleet of six Oscar Mayer Wienermobiles competing on the iconic 2.5-mile oval. Each 27-foot-long vehicle is branded to represent a different regional hot dog style, such as the Chi Dog or the New York Dog. While the vehicles are not built for high-speed racing, they reach top speeds of around 40 to 60 mph during the exhibition.
The inaugural race took place in 2025 and was won by the Slaw Dog. It became an instant fan favorite, drawing tens of thousands of spectators and millions of online viewers. Traditions include drivers wearing custom racing suits, a winners circle celebration with a mustard spray, and a unique trophy. The event is returning in 2026 with a fan vote to determine the newest regional contender.

The Tritan A2, often called the Aerocar, was a futuristic three-wheeled vehicle commissioned by founder Tom Monaghan in 1984. Designed by engineers James and Douglas Amick, its fiberglass body looked more like a fighter jet or a spaceship than a delivery car. It featured a sliding canopy for the driver to enter and a specialized pizza warming oven in the rear instead of a passenger seat.

The vehicle was built for extreme efficiency, boasting a drag coefficient of 0.15 and achieving up to 80 mpg. It was powered by a small 440cc air-cooled rotary engine and utilized a unique rear wing meant to capture crosswinds for extra stability and thrust. Despite plans to build nearly 200 units, only 10 were ever produced. The project was eventually scrapped because the low-slung, fragile design proved impractical for actual street delivery.

Bertha Benz was far more than a supportive spouse; she was the first venture capitalist and marketing pioneer of the automotive age. When Karl Benz struggled to commercialize his invention, Bertha recognized that the public viewed the Patent-Motorwagen as a fragile curiosity rather than a practical tool.

In August 1888, without official permission or her husband's knowledge, she took her two sons on a 66 mile journey from Mannheim to Pforzheim. This historic drive served as the first rigorous long-distance road test in history. Her technical intuition led to immediate mechanical improvements. When the wooden brakes failed, she asked a cobbler to install leather strips, effectively inventing brake linings. She also used a hatpin to clear a clogged fuel line and her garter to insulate an ignition wire.

Upon her return, she suggested adding a third gear for climbing hills, a feature missing from the original design. Her journey proved the vehicle's reliability to a skeptical public, transforming a stationary engine experiment into a viable industry.

Mercedes-Benz diesel engines have established a legendary reputation for durability and over-engineered simplicity. The journey began in earnest with the OM621 found in the Ponton and Fintail models, providing modest power but exceptional longevity.
The introduction of the OM615 and OM616 four-cylinder engines in the 1960s and 70s powered the iconic W115 and W123 chassis. These powerplants utilized indirect injection and glow plugs, requiring a manual start procedure that became a hallmark of the brand.
A significant turning point occurred in the mid-1970s with the OM617. This five-cylinder engine became the gold standard for reliability. In 1978, Mercedes-Benz pioneered the use of turbocharging in passenger diesel cars with the 300SD, proving that diesel efficiency could coexist with highway-capable performance.
By the mid-1980s, the OM60x series arrived, featuring overhead camshafts and hydraulic lifters for smoother, quieter operation. These engines powered the W124 and W201 generations until 1987 and beyond. Throughout this thirty-year span, these engines frequently eclipsed 300,000 miles, cementing the diesel Mercedes as the ultimate high-mileage marathoner.
