Randy Carlson tells me about his Volkswagen Karmann Ghia “La Cucaracha” build. A tribute to the cars that were raced on the Mexican road rally race (La Carrera Panamericana). Not a period-correct build but a fun example that captures everything nicely. The car is covered with antique graphics from maps and matchbooks mimicking the cars that were on the La Carrera Panamericana race.

Petty nice to see this sympathetic restoration on Ed Godshalk’s 1946 Cisitalia D46 raced by Tazio Nuvolari and Piero Taruffi. They only made 20-30 of these cars and it was very pioneering in the day. I love seeing the history captured in the patina etc

Striking car built out of mahogany with 8,500 metal rivets. Restored to a magnificent level, it was hard to take my eyes off it. The car just had a presence to it among the other cars on the lawn. Looking at it in the AM it was not surprise that the 1924 Hispano-Suiza H6C Nieuport-Astra Torpedo would be the 2025 Pebble Beach Winner.
