In my opinion this is by far the most important thing to watch for in your air cooled VW. Especially when taking it out of storage. If you see ANY nesting material sticking out of the tinwork, it's just the tip of the iceberg. Running it without cleaning it out would surely have melted a piston. 🐭🐁🐀 🤬

It's easy to neglect the oil strainers when you have the cover plate with the center drain plug. You don't need to clean them every oil change, but a lot sooner than this one!
