In Memory of Tom Matano

The Southern California Miata Club joins the Miata community around the world in mourning the loss of Tom Matano, the visionary designer behind the Mazda Miata.

Our club exists because of the joy his creation has given us. What began as his dream of a lightweight, driver-focused roadster has grown into a family of enthusiasts who share not only a love of the car, but also lifelong friendships and unforgettable experiences.

Tom’s vision did more than design an automobile—it created a community. Every gathering, every drive, every smile shared among our members is part of the legacy he leaves behind.

He reminded us to “Always inspire”—and through the Miata, he has inspired countless drivers around the world to embrace joy, connection, and the simple pleasure of the open road.

We are profoundly grateful for the gift he gave us, and we honor his memory each time we turn the key and feel that unique connection between driver, car, and road.

Rest in peace, Tom. Your spirit rides with us always. ❤️
