Canyon Country Teardrops

Canyon Country Teardrops Teardrop Trailers The original Teardrop was an efficient, tow-behind, airfoil-shaped trailer that became the rage in the 1940s & 50s.

This unique camping solution was eclipsed nearly half a century ago by hefty RVs and motorhomes with no regard to portability or cost of ownership. These streamlined tag-alongs are now making a big comeback among the camping crowd because of their unique features and ease of use. The Teardrop's resurgence has grown out of a need for a light-weight camper that can be towed by a smaller, more fuel e

fficient vehicle. The quick to no set-up time, comfortable bed for two and a cooking galley sheltered from the elements offers an excellent, cost sensitive solution. New-age owners relish hitching them to a classic car, hot rod, late model sports car or custom vehicle.

It was late when I pulled into the Eustace Lake campground about one mile east of Zuni on the Zuni Pueblo Indian Reservation in New Mexico. The sun's attention span was rapidly shrinking as pebbles glistened and glinted in the dusk. In the morning, I realized that it was not the lustrous reflection of rocks that I had seen the night before; rather, it was broken glass everywhere. I couldn't help but remember the early 1970s Keep American Beautiful commercial featuring a Native American canoeing into the heart of an industrial city. As he disembarked, litter was thrown onto his moccasins from a passing car. The "Crying Indian" turned to the camera with a tear running down his cheek. It was a powerful commercial. Looking at all of the litter in Zuni, I couldn't help but wonder where all of the "Crying Indians" have gone.

The Spring 2012 edition of Motor Trend Classic featured one of our Sierra teardrop trailers in its segment entitled "Classic Style - Route 66." In the background is the Wigwam Motel in Holbrook, Arizona, which was built in 1950. Route 66 aficionados have the opportunity to sleep in one of fifteen concrete and steel teepees. Each unit has a small bathroom with sink, toilet, and shower. The rooms contain the original hand-made hickory furniture, two double beds, cable TV and a window mounted air conditioner; there are no telephones or Internet access. Vintage restored automobiles from the 1960s and earlier are located throughout the parking area; and a museum has a collection of Indian artifacts, Civil War memorabilia, Route 66 collectibles, and a petrified wood collection. The Wigwam Village Motel was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 2002.

Jon and I picked up the chassis and materials for an off-road Krawler model yesterday in Upland, CA. We finished insulating and covering the floor today in our currently unairconditioned shop. I'll be glad when the daytime temperature dips below triple digits.

Black Diamond Campground about 7.5 miles from Sante Fe. Great spot; however, I quickly OD'd on Sante Fe & its historic plaza. Too many tourists! It's Sedona on steroids. Taos is just as bad. Adobe Disneylands with overpriced art and overpriced beer. Couldn't wait to get off the grid. Found respite on blue highway 53 through the Zuni Indian Reservation.

Last week Emily and I visited Lex Higgins, my good friend and former roommate during our years in the PhD program at the Univ. of Colorado in Boulder. Lex has done what so many of us aspire to do, simplified his life. He and his wife Vicky moved into a log cabin about 9 miles from pavement near La Veta Pass in southern Colorado. Lex spends his days cutting wood, walking his dogs, reading and writing. Walking with Hig through the woods, it was clear that there is no chaos in nature - a leaf falls where it is supposed to fall. A cozy night was spent in the teardrop with temperatures in the mid-forties at an elevation of 9300 feet.
