Before you replace your windows, ask what problem you're actually solving.

If the frames are rotting or the seals have failed, replacement may be the right call. But if the issue is heat, glare, fading, or privacy, window film handles all four for a fraction of the cost of new windows, with far less disruption to your home or building.

It also keeps good glass out of the landfill.

The glass next to your front door tells strangers more than you think.

Lights and door glass let anyone on the porch see into your entryway, your stairs, and sometimes your living room. They're also the easiest glass to break and reach the lock through.

Decorative privacy film blurs the view and still lets light in. Add security film, and that glass holds together far better if someone tries to break it.

Your entry should welcome guests, not give a tour. Get a privacy and security quote at coolvu.com.

"Won't window film make my house dark?" It's one of the most common questions we hear.

Not unless you want it to. Films come in a wide range of light levels. Some are nearly invisible from inside and still reject solar heat. Others are darker for maximum glare control. The number to ask about is VLT (visible light transmission). Higher VLT means more natural light gets through.

Had film installed for summer heat. Does it still do anything in winter?

Straight answer, no sales spin.

THE SUMMER JOB: Reduce solar heat gain. Block infrared. Lower cooling loads.

THE WINTER JOB: Different mechanism entirely.
Low-emissivity films reflect radiant heat from your HVAC back into the room instead of letting it escape through the glass. Most pronounced on single-pane windows. Real, but smaller on double-pane.

THE TWO THINGS THAT DON'T CHANGE:
UV-A is present in January. Same 99% blocked. Interior fading doesn't pause for winter.
Low-angle winter sun creates worse glare than summer in many rooms. East and west exposures especially. Film still handles it.

THE NUANCE ON SOUTH-FACING GLASS:
Solar control film on south-facing windows in cold climates reduces some passive solar gain you might actually want in winter. Worth knowing before assuming the summer install is universally beneficial in January.

Same film. Different season. Still working — just differently than it was in August.

Your south-facing windows are about to get brighter, not dimmer.

As the sun sits lower in the sky through fall and winter, its light reaches deeper into your rooms. That means more glare on screens, more sun on floors and furniture, and hot spots in rooms that felt fine all summer.

Window film cuts that glare and blocks up to 99% of UV rays while keeping the view and daylight you want. Fall is a smart time to install, before the low winter sun settles in.

"Low-E" is on every window spec. Most homeowners have no idea what it means — or whether they even have it.

The E stands for emissivity — how readily glass radiates heat. Standard glass emissivity: 0.84. High-performance Low-E: as low as 0.02. That difference is what changes how your window performs in both winter and summer.

But here's what most explanations miss: not all Low-E coatings are the same. Passive Low-E maximizes winter solar gain. Solar control Low-E reduces it. Both are sold as "Low-E windows" — and they behave very differently in summer.

You can check if you have it with a lighter. The NFRC label on your frame tells you more. And if you still have afternoon overheating or fading with Low-E windows, the coating probably wasn't designed for full solar control at your exposure.

Low-E describes a coating method. Not a performance outcome.

September brings employees back to desks they tolerated in May — and a lower sun angle that now sends glare deeper into south and east-facing positions than summer did.

Research published in Frontiers in Built Environment confirms it: poor thermal comfort in open-plan offices increases absenteeism and makes concentration difficult. SAGE Open's systematic review lists glare and temperature control as the most consistent complaints across studies.

The problem is the glass. Floor-to-ceiling glazing creates temperature differentials across the floor plate that HVAC can't fully correct. Certain desks become uncomfortable by 2 PM. People move. Space goes unused.

Solar control film addresses it at the source — not with blinds, not with more AC.

Kids and glass are a risky combination in an accident.

Impact safety film holds glass together if it breaks, so a shattered window doesn't mean a room full of sharp fragments. It's a simple upgrade for schools, daycares, and gyms where active kids and windows share the same space.

Summer ends. Most people stop thinking about UV damage until next May.

That's the wrong call.

In September, the sun drops lower on the horizon. Lower angle means light enters south-facing windows at a shallower trajectory — reaching deeper into your rooms, hitting surfaces summer's high-angle sun never touched.

UV-A radiation doesn't follow the weather calendar. It's present year-round. Standard glass transmits 70-75% of it regardless of season.

The back wall. The middle of the rug. The furniture you moved in spring. These surfaces are now in the path of autumn light that wasn't an issue in July.

UV-A doesn't take a season off. Your protection shouldn't either.
