This is a big one. I had been reading VW Trends Magazine since I was a teenager always hoping one day I’d get Herbie aka CSP 053 in a feature. I also remember reading articles about individual engine builders and their back stories and advice which led to me building my first engine at 16. VW trends went out in 2005 so I thought my chances ended there. Thankfully the editor Dan Ledbetter revived the magazine post Covid and here we are after getting to meet him last summer at the Terryville Bug a Fair on Herbies first drive with new CSP 2490cc and taking 1st place. The engine of which is also featured under “what’s new” in this issue. It is very surreal to see an engine we developed in print in this magazine.

It’s been 10yrs now with the 3.6 swapped into my mk4 R and now finally I feel like it’s complete in what I was trying to do. The idea was a “what if” VW made 1000 mk4 R36s along with the 5k R32s, what would be different?

I wanted to finally post about what I’ve been working on in my limited free time the first half of this year. This is our 2.5l/ 2490cc type 1 oe magnesium case engine. 96x86. The goal was to build a fun street engine capable of 200 naturally aspirated wheel hp and have plenty of torque. It had both, so much so bigger front brakes are going on asap. There is more testing and what not to be done, hoping to hit 210whp and be able to offer a complete engine, harness, ecu w/ tune package in the new year.
