30 DAYS TO ROUTE 66! ๐๐ต
Wellโฆ I guess itโs time to make it official!
For the last few months, Iโve been quietly planning a pretty big adventure for Arthur โ and now we have a sticker to prove it. ๐
On September 20th, Arthur and I will head to the Santa Monica Pier and point east on Historic Route 66, with a goal of making it all the way to Amarillo, Texas!
Not the fastest route. Not the freeway whenever we can avoid it. The plan is to follow as much of the old Mother Road as we reasonably can โ through the little towns, old alignments, roadside attractions and pieces of Americana that have survived long after Route 66 was officially decommissioned.
And yes, we're doing it in a 1962 VW dune buggy. ๐
There are some stops I'm especially looking forward to. Oatman, Seligman, Winslow, a night in a Wigwam in Holbrook, the Painted Desert and Petrified Forest, New Mexico, the Route 66 midpoint in Adrian, and finally Amarillo.
There will also be one little detour that isn't technically Route 66, but means a lot to me. Arthur will visit Golden Shores, Arizona, where my grandparents had a vacation home and where, as a kid, my Grandpa taught me to drive in his Manx-style dune buggy. Arthur is named after him, and Grandpa was born in Texas โ which makes getting this little buggy across that Texas state line feel just a little more special.
The entire adventure will be about 10 days and roughly 2,500 miles, including the trip home.
I've been getting Arthur ready, planning fuel stops, gathering spare parts and emergency gear, studying the route, and figuring out what I absolutely have to see along the way.
And, of course, I'll be taking plenty of pictures and video so you can follow along.
This should be fun. ๐๐ต๐
