We left Grand Canyon National Park and drove an hour south to the Grand Canyon Railway RV Park in Williams, Arizona. The campground was just a giant paved parking lot, a big change from our last campsite. They had full hookups and it was close to everything, so that made it not so bad. Once we were set up, we jumped back in the truck and went to a nearby attraction, Bearizona. It was a zoo with an amazing drive through exhibit and also a walkthrough area. We enjoyed seeing the baby mountain goats, wolves and of course the bears.

After Bearizona, we went into town to eat at Cruisers Cafe, a throw back diner on Route 66. We enjoyed the food and live music and also enjoyed walking through Williams before heading back to the camper for the night.

The next morning, after fueling up the truck, we were back on the road! This would be our first travel day on I-40, an interstate we live just off of back in NC. Most of I-40 parallels Route 66 in this area, so we made a few stops along our route to enjoy the attractions. At this point, we were focused on getting back to North Carolina, so we only stayed overnight and stayed hooked to the truck at each campground. After five long travel days, we finally made it to NC! We would stay in the western part of the state for a few days before heading home. I’ll cover more about this campground in the next post.

We left Lake Powell for a short drive to the Grand Canyon! In my mind I had heard so many different things about this place. Mostly that it's cool to see for a minute, but mostly overrated. As we arrived, I was excited because I had always said that it was my RV goal to camp at the Grand Canyon. I honestly never thought it would be something we would actually do until we retired.

We entered the park at the east entrance, took a picture with the national park sign and drove over to Desert View Watchtower. We ate a quick lunch before walking out and viewing the canyon for the first time. I have to say I was blown away at the site of the place! There was so much to take in at once.

We drove across the park to Trailer Village, our home for the night. This was our first stay in a national park and we only booked one night because we expected this place to be overrated as well. What a mistake!

We got set up in a terribly unlevel site, but it was totally worth it because just across from us there were woods, not other campers. We caught a bus to Grand Canyon Village, visited shops and viewed the canyon while eating a big cone of ice cream. The view never got old! Back at the campground, we watched a few deer walk through our site and continue on through the campground. You could hear the other campers' excitement as they walked past each site.

We woke up early the next morning and followed a trail through the woods to Mather Point. Since it was early, there were only a few folks out. It was pretty special to be able to almost have the place to ourselves. We made the hike back and had breakfast at the camper. As we were eating I noticed my wife had wondered across the road and was watching something in the distance. We walked over and she pointed out two elk just hanging out in the woods. It was an amazing site! We spotted another elk headed towards us and he started bugling. He was in a bit of hurry and he was huge so we headed back to the camper and watched from a distance. He eventually made his way to our campsite and we watched from inside as he walked by like he probably does every day of his life. We really got the full national park experience!

We were so disappointed that we had to leave that morning, but we know without a shadow of a doubt that we will return one day and stay much longer.

We left Moab the morning of June 15th, 2024 headed through the desert to Lake Powell! On the way we took a slight detour through Meixcan Hat, Forrest Gump Point and Monument Valley. It was a beautiful drive.

We arrived at Antelope Point Marina and RV Park in the afternoon and I couldn't wait to see the lake! This stop was on my bucket list. This is a legendary lake in the world of wakeboarding and I lived through pictures of it in magazines and videos back when I was growing up. It was amazing to see in person.

Side note about the campground: It is located in Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. You will have to pay to get in each time you leave and come back. 4th graders nationwide are eligible for a free national park pass. Luckily our daughter was a 4th grader and we were able to get in for free. Be sure to sign up for a pass before you go!

We jumped on a late afternoon boat tour, then grabbed dinner at the marina. The tour was beautiful and seeing all the house boats and wakeboard boats made me want to be financially irresponsible.

The next day we found a place to cool off in the lake and then explored the town of Page. There are amazing slot canyons in this area, but I just couldn't bring myself to pay the crazy price for the tour. After some research, we planned a visit to hike Wire Pass, which is also a slot canyon, but with the threat of rain we decided not to make the drive. The threat of flash floods in those tiny canyons can be extremely dangerous and we didn't want to chance it.

We did visit the famous Horseshoe Canyon while we were there. It was beautiful and all but the crowds just really made it no fun for us. I'd probably skip that next time.

On the morning of the 17th, we hooked to the camper and left Lake Powell, headed for the Grand Canyon! Overall, being able to visit the lake was an amazing experience, but you really need to stay in a house boat or rent a boat to make it worth it. Everything there was expensive and it didn't really fit our style of travel on this trip. We are more of the "eat a sandwich in the camper on the side of the road" kind of travelers..
