Link to the full swap video is in our bio.

A fun little project we've been working on  as time permits here at the shop is this '88 Caprice Wagon. I had enough spare parts around to put together a halfway decent 5.3L LS for it and coupled that to a that's been sitting in the corner for years.

I recently posted the full swap video (with my trademark terrible production quality) on the "MuleTown Speed and Dyno" YouTube channel that goes into a little detail on how I pulled the tired 307 Olds and dropped in the LS variant. I discuss motor / trans mounts, wiring, fuel system, exhaust, and more, all done with mostly leftover parts in true low buck fashion.

Another wagon update video will be up soon where I'll get it strapped to and see how much power the garbage 5.3 makes in it's current form.

Update! We are finally caught up on backordered engines and we are working on building inventory back up. Thanks to all who have been waiting!

I just put a 4.8L level 3 engine up on the website and as of now it's still available. All the info on our available engines can be found at muletownspeed.com and as always, this engine comes full cleaned, inspected and tested (with run video) so you know you're getting a solid engine.

05/07/2022

For those of you calling or messaging regarding LS engines, please be patient as we get caught up on our backlog of orders! We will post here when we're caught up and taking new customers!

We appreciate your patience and look forward to another batch of LS engines to power your projects.

See our website or page for the video of us testing this one.

Please keep in mind this engine has a fairly girthy camshaft and needs to be properly tuned when installed in your vehicle! Failure to do this may result in engine damage. The current tune in this engine is sufficient to get it started and driving around but care needs to be taken not to apply too much load before fuel and spark is properly dialed in.

Cam Specs: 228/230 @ .050, .585/.585 lift on 112LSA

This time we have a 5.3L gen 3 LM7 engine that comes with a programmed PCM, harness that will work with a 4L60E, 4L80E, or older autos and manuals, fuse block, accessories, and all the sensors etc to get your project going. If you're interested in this one, send me an email at [email protected]. You can also call or text (931) 982-8284 or send me a DM via Insta or FB () Make sure to reference #353009 when you contact.

Most of your questions will be answered in the video but here's a quick rundown: The engine received a stage 2 cam and PAC 1218 valvesprings and Felpro valve stem seals. The lifters were replaced with a new set of LS7 lifters, new MLS head gaskets, timing chain, oil pump, new spark plugs, water pump and water pump gaskets, starter, O2 sensors, exhaust manifold gaskets, serpentine belt, oil and filter. We also added an IAT sensor to the intake and converted the tune to speed density (no MAF). Our level 3 kits are a great way to get your LS swap going quickly without breaking the bank and this one sounds fantastic. A detailed list of what's included in a level 3 turn-key package can be found on the "Engine Levels Explained" page.

A note about our engines: MuleTown Speed does not remanufacture or rebuild engines, nor do we claim to. Each of our engines comes from a salvaged vehicle and is torn down to a long block at a minimum for inspection. Each engine is carefully reassembled with good quality parts and is tested on our engine test stand. If any issues are noted during our testing, the engine is torn back down as needed to address the issue. For instance, if we find a particular engine has water damage in a cylinder, we will completely disassemble it, have it machined, and reassembled. But every engine is different, so the price of every engine is different as a result. We cannot warranty these engines as they are not rebuilt or remanufactured, and any issues will be handled by Muletown Speed on a case-by-case bases at the discretion of MuleTown Speed. Each engine has its own video recording of it actually running to give you, the customer, confidence that what you are buying is a solid engine. This is how we are able to keep prices low.

Can we talk about underdogs for a minute?

In the LS world, there are many varieties and flavors of used engines that are ripe for the picking (and swapping.) The most common of all LS-based engines are the truck variants in 4.8L, 5.3L, and 6.0L displacements. When looking for a donor engine, most swappers automatically look for a good 5.3 or 6.0, completely dismissing the small but mighty 4.8L purely based on displacement. No one is wrong for wanting a 5.3 or 6.0 for their project, but please consider the following before passing up one of the little guys. These 4.8L LS engines are incredibly underrated in the LS-swap-the-world community where the only limit to power output, within reasonable limits, is simply answering the question, “How much do you want?”

These little power houses share all the same architecture as their larger-displaced brethren and hence share all the benefits that make the LS-based engines so great. All of the power-adding goodies can be applied, including camshafts, valve springs, turbochargers, intakes, exhaust and the like. Even Hot Rod Magazine learned this in their “Big Bang” engine story in which Richard Holdner dyno-tested a stock bottom end 4.8L under boost to over 1200hp. I strongly recommend you check that story out (google “Big Bang Hot Rod Magazine” for that.) Holdner’s story claims over 60 dyno pulls, many of which over 1000HP. Try that with a stock bottom end SBC.

Speaking of small block Chevys, let’s compare some numbers. Square-body Chevy trucks are the rage these days so I’ll pick on their 350 and 305. In 1981 a K10 was most commonly equipped with a 305ci (130-160 HP) or a 350ci (175 HP)power plant. Torque was only slightly better at 240 ft-lbs/275 ft-lbs respectively. Compare that to the output of a 4.8L gen3 LR4 – 255-280 HP and 285-295 ft-lbs! That’s almost double the power and torque as the factory 350ci in 1981. This comparison starts to show why this little engine is a great upgrade for your squarebody or any other classic truck or car. Throw a mild cam and a set of headers on the otherwise stock 4.8L and you’ve easily got a 300+ HP mill that will idle, make good vacuum, roast the tires, all while not overheating. Add cylinder heads, intakes, nitrous or boost and the sky is the limit.

Let’s be honest though: comparing the 4.8L to the common 5.3L LM7 does show the slight edge in power and torque goes to the larger 5.3L, but considering most gearheads can’t leave their engines well enough alone, the small power disadvantage the 4.8L endures under the 5.3L is quickly consumed by even the simplest upgrades. Pair that with the fact that 4.8L’s are almost universally cheaper to obtain over the more popular LM7, you might start to see how starting with the smaller engine might put you ahead!

To know for sure what you’re looking at, pull a spark plug and take a gander at the top of the piston. You may have to rotate the engine over until you can see it but if that piston is dished, you’ve got a 5.3. A 4.8 will have a flat top piston. (the exception being the L33 aluminum block 5.3 will have flat tops as well. Look for the aluminum block as a giveaway.) I have been suckered into paying a premium for what I thought was a 5.3L only to find out that it was in fact a 4.8L. Since I failed to do the common checks before buying, that’s on me. In the “Big Bang” story mentioned earlier, they too found out their 5.3L was in fact a 4.8L. All the better in my opinion! Thicker webs between the cylinders means less block distortion under heavy boost. That’s what makes a turbo 4.8l scoff at displacement.

The 2007+ 4.8’s got additional improvements making them even more boost-approved. These included beefier rods and either 799/243 casting cylinder heads which are the best flowing factory cathedral port LS head that GM made.

All this goodness is why most of my personal LS swaps have been 4.8L engines. They’re just so good and they shouldn’t be discounted for any LS-swap. In fact we usually have at least one 4.8L package on the shelf and ready to go, so if you’ve got questions about these little power houses, let us know. You can also get more info on cam / valvespring packages we can install on the 4.8 or any LS engine package we sell. Check MuleTownSpeed.com for the most up-to-date inventory of cleaned, inspected, and tested used LS engine packages.

Most of your questions will be answered in the video but here's a quick rundown: This engine came from a wrecked truck and only needed a set of spark plugs, water pump gaskets, and a couple of ignition coils. The injectors were cleaned and flow-tested as well. This engine came factory with the big 87mm NNBS intake and throttle body, upgraded beefier rods, and high flowing 799 heads. Its a great performance combo. It fired right up on our engine test stand and ran great with no issues. This is a 58x engine and will require a PCM that is 58x (Gen4) specific. Some folks choose to run a Holley Terminator System with these engines which includes a Holley PCM, while others run a stand alone harness and factory PCM. Both are good options but the choice is yours!. A detailed list of what's included in a level 2 package can be found on the "Engine Levels Explained" page on our website, Muletownspeed.com
