When someone opens the ECU before sending it out to you and you find pads and components missing on the board. Usually I will not take these jobs if its already opened but in this case it came from a friend's shop and they wanted me to take a look. Hopefully ill sort this one out. No com to scantool on the car but I have communications on the bench. Almost thinking its sonething else taking the CAN Bus down in the vehicle. This ECU could be damaged or just missing the one component. Ill have to check my documents for this ecu to see what was there as Ive worked on this type before and took plenty of photos. Almost need another HDD since Im running out of space for my own testing database

Had to Jtag into this Ferarri TMS320F DSP Chip and clone it a while back. This one failed but luckly the customer had another that had good data on it that I was able to clone over after replacing the DSP chip. Took a good bit of time to figure out what was going on. after bad data was getting spit out on the CAN bus and checking all the logics with a curve tracer and logic analyzer I was able to determine the flash was corrupt. I also found complete sections of memory that were gone completely with no access. I got the new IC in and flashed it with a copy of the good working units flash using Jtag on the connector on the left. No documentation on this so I had to figure out what each pin does with a test signal input and logic analyzer on each pin watching activity. Then go through roughly 850 Pages on the datasheet looking for timing, commands the input looks for and a ton of other things. But I got it figured out, my documentation saved and the flash memory saved. It was an expensive reverse engineering project because these boards dont seem to exist anymore

Merry Christmas! Thank you all who worked with me and all the customers who kept me challenging myself all year long on different projects and adventures. Ive learned a lot over the year and discovered new ways to do things and worked on electronics from kids toys to musical equipment, fireworks control boards, classified hardware that was in millions of dollars of development and even all the electronics in vehicles. You all racked my brain and gave me new challenges. Thanks for keeping me busy for 2025. We will see where 2026 takes us.

Thanks for a great 2025,
Chad

Had a lot going on right before Thanksgiving with Electronics repairs. Not all were automotive related. Had to fix up and clean a keyboard for a church performance that was a rush job since the one business the customer takes equipment to had surgery so I help all I could and get it going for them. Also had a few ECUs and body module controls to work on and get mailed back to a few places across the USA. Also waiting till the weather clears up enough so I can get the 6.1 twin turbo jeep motor installed and also put in another 2 engines for a customer and another for my best friend. Busy busy. Plus I have to manage the home front and take care of my little autistic 5 yr old who wants to keep me up all night. Definitely a busy week before Thanksgiving. Got a lot done but still have more to do. This week slowed down so hopefully when the rain clears up Ill get these jobs outside done.

Business has changed once more. Since the city didnt like me working from home on cars in my driveway (We are not HOA), I have decided to repair electronics full time and drop the mechanic side of things till I get a shop built. Not sure when that will be so we will see what the future holds. You must always adapt to change and keep pushing forward even if the local city tries to stop the things you are passionate about. You adapt to survive.

Looking for a 1981 VW Vanagon California Emissions ECU for parts. Figure Id post up what im hunting for. Its this riser board with part numbers 273 002 stamped on it as well as 041BS stamped on it. This is the part for the O2 sensor sensing circuit inside the ecu. It converts the signal from the 02 sensor to correct fueling. These are ceramic boards with calibrated silver traces and laser welded silver microwave after inspection its not something repairable.

Probably not gonna find this AFC ECU. May end up later running these engines on aftermarket ecus

1982 VW bus ECU and Idle and OSX repair. Took some time to find good parts for it. Ordered some parts online that ended up being fakes unfortunately and was the only ones I could find so I started looking for alternative parts with same specs from one of the good tested unit. Luckly I had a good ecu to test from and I had to add another online company to the do not source parts from list. Its been a long process so this may be the last few of these ECUs that will work on since I cant get parts anymore and have to substitute some other parts. The industry to repair vintage equipment is slowly fading unfortunately and that makes older running vehicles become more expensive. I also could convert to a more modern ECU but many collectors like the original stuff. Soon they will not have a choice but to sway to a more modern ecu like what I had to do for the 308 Ferrari last year.
