Yearly maintenance on your riding lawn mower is essential to keep it running smoothly, extend its lifespan, and ensure your lawn stays perfectly manicured throughout the mowing season. Much like a car, your riding mower requires regular attention to its engine, blades, and other critical components to perform at its best. Here’s a detailed guide to help you carry out yearly maintenance and keep your mower in top shape.
Start with the engine.
Change the oil and replace the oil filter, if your mower has one. Fresh oil lubricates the engine’s moving parts, preventing wear and overheating. Before changing the oil, warm up the engine for a few minutes to help the oil drain out smoothly. After draining the old oil, refill with the type and amount recommended in your mower’s owner’s manual.
Next, replace the air filter.
A clean air filter ensures the engine gets enough air for combustion, which improves fuel efficiency and power. If the air filter is clogged with dirt and debris, it can cause the engine to run roughly or stall. Foam filters can be washed and reused, while paper filters typically need replacement. Check the spark plugs. Inspect them for wear or buildup and replace if necessary. Spark plugs play a crucial role in igniting the fuel-air mixture in the engine, and worn plugs can cause hard starts or poor performance.
Fuel system maintenance is also important. Drain any old fuel from the tank and carburetor, especially if the mower was stored with fuel in it. Old gasoline can become stale and clog the carburetor jets, leading to poor engine performance. Consider adding a fuel stabilizer to fresh fuel during the storage period to keep it fresh.
Sharpening or replacing the mower blades is another vital task. Sharp blades cut grass cleanly, resulting in a healthier lawn and a better appearance. Dull blades tear the grass, making it more susceptible to disease. Remove the blades carefully
