Luft 12 Entry Stories 001: 
This 1988 Porsche 959 Sport is chassis 011, the 11th 959 S built and the first 959 registered in the United States. 
It was purchased new by Vasek P***k Jr., son of noted California Porsche dealer and racer Vasek P***k. He picked the car up personally in Stuttgart and drove it around Europe before bringing it home to the U.S. 
Years later, chassis 011 returned to Stuttgart, spending six months on display at the Porsche Museum as part of a supercar exhibit celebrating the launch of the 918 Spyder. Today, it remains in its original specification and still wears its original Grand Prix White paint.

Thinking back to when Luft 7 took over Indianapolis.

Air-cooled Porsches filled the streets, loading docks and a former Coca-Cola bottling plant. Race cars next to street cars. Old friends next to new ones. Plenty to see if you knew where to look.

There’s been a lot of Flachbau talk post Monterey Car Week. 
A good time to remember where the road-going story started. 
The shape came from the 935, where Norbert Singer traded the 911’s upright front fenders for a flatter nose in the pursuit of less drag. It wasn’t long before the idea made its way to the street through Porsche’s Sonderwunsch program, eventually becoming the 930 Flachbau.
 Race car first. Road car next.

The Porsche 935 grew out of a loophole. Group 5 rules in the late 1970s asked for a production silhouette and left everything underneath open to interpretation. Porsche took that freedom and built one of the most dominant race cars of its era, debuting in 1976. That makes 2026 the 935’s 50th anniversary.

A small German team called Kremer took it further. Their K3 variant won Le Mans outright in 1979, driven by Klaus Ludwig and two American brothers, Don and Bill Whittington. The first rear-engine car ever to win the race outright, right ahead of a 935 driven in part by Paul Newman, who finished second in his only Le Mans start.

Those same Whittington brothers went on to own Road Atlanta.

The 935 is the hero car for Luft 12’s event art, marking its 50th year and on display at Trilith Studios in metro Atlanta this October.

Steve McQueen drove a 917 through Le Mans. Will Smith made the 964 Turbo iconic in Bad Boys. The camera has loved this marque for decades.

Luft has its own history here. We’ve set up shop on a studio backlot before.

This time we’re calling a different stage home.
