What's the difference between a car wash and professional detailing?

A thought from the shop today...

One of the biggest misconceptions in our industry is that detailing is a commodity.

It's not.

Two shops can offer "ceramic coating" or "paint correction" and have completely different levels of experience, preparation, products, equipment, and results.

Over the years, I've learned that the customers who focus solely on finding the lowest price are rarely the happiest customers. They're often looking for reasons to justify their decision before the work even begins.

The customers who value quality, communication, experience, and professionalism usually have a completely different experience. They trust the process, appreciate the attention to detail, and understand that protecting a vehicle properly takes time.

Happy Father's Day from Gordon's Elite Detailing!

Today the shop took a back seat to family.

The day started at the beach with my daughters, Gabby and Skylar, and our dog Wally, who absolutely loves chasing his ball through the surf and trying not to get knocked over by the waves.

We spent the day enjoying the sunshine, sharing meals together, making memories, and ending the evening with a little family fun around Myrtle Beach.

As a small business owner, it's easy to get caught up in the day-to-day responsibilities of running a business. Days like today are a great reminder of why we work so hard in the first place.

To all the dads, stepdads, grandfathers, and father figures in our community, we hope you had an amazing Father's Day surrounded by the people who matter most.

Nearly 10 years ago, I had the opportunity to work on one of the most iconic automobiles ever built—a Ferrari F40.

This project was performed onsite at in Pennsylvania, a facility well known throughout the Ferrari community for its expertise in servicing, restoring, and preserving some of the world's most significant Ferraris.

At first glance, it looked like a straightforward paint enhancement and ceramic coating project.

It wasn't.

What should have been a routine correction quickly turned into one of the most tedious vehicles I had worked on at the time. Every vent, edge, body line, and panel required careful attention. If memory serves me correctly, the project took nearly twice as long as originally anticipated.

But one memory stands out more than anything else.

As I worked through the paint enhancement process, my polishing pads kept turning red.

Now, any experienced detailer understands why.

The F40's paint thickness is largely color. The red pigment itself transfers to the pad during polishing. It's completely normal.

But when you're standing in front of a Ferrari F40 and your polishing pad suddenly looks like it was dipped in Rosso Corsa paint, your brain doesn't immediately think logically.

Every pass I made, I cringed just a little.

I remember thinking, "There's Ferrari red paint all over my buffing pads."

As a younger detailer, that's a moment that gets your attention in a hurry.

Years later, while reminiscing about the project with a trusted industry professional, I mentioned that memory. His response still makes me laugh today:

"It's actually easy to polish if you get past the mental side. The paint thickness is all color."

And honestly, he was right.

The challenge wasn't the polishing itself.

The challenge was getting past the fact that you were polishing one of the most legendary Ferraris ever built.

The Ferrari F40 wasn't designed to be luxurious.
It wasn't designed to be practical.

It was built to celebrate Ferrari's 40th anniversary and became the final Ferrari personally approved by Enzo Ferrari himself.

The goal of this project wasn't perfection.
The goal was preservation.

A Single-Stage Paint Enhancement was performed to improve gloss, clarity, and overall appearance while respecting the originality of the vehicle. Once complete, a 2-Year Ceramic Coating was applied to help protect the finish and simplify future maintenance.

Looking back nearly a decade later, these photos remind me how much has changed.

The coatings have improved.
The equipment has evolved.
The experience has grown.

But one thing remains exactly the same:

Respect the vehicle.
Trust the process.
Never rush the details.

Some cars are memorable.

Others become part of your story.

This Ferrari F40 will always be one of mine.
