Kansas recorded over 56,000 traffic crashes in 2024. That is roughly one every nine minutes across the state. Most of us will be involved in an accident at some point and the moments right after determine whether you are legally protected and financially covered.

Here is exactly what to do if it happens to you in Kansas.

First check yourself and your passengers for injuries. Adrenaline masks pain so take a breath and do a real check before jumping out of the car.

Then call 911. This is actually the law in Kansas. Under K.S.A. 8-1606 you are required to notify police for any accident involving injury or property damage of $1,000 or more. Given what even minor fender benders cost to repair these days that covers almost every collision with visible damage.

While you wait for officers to arrive use your phone to document everything. Photos of both vehicles from multiple angles. The other car's license plate. Skid marks. Road conditions. And get witness contact information before anyone leaves because once they are gone they are almost impossible to track down.

Exchange the required information with the other driver. Name, license number, registration and insurance. But do not discuss fault. Do not say sorry. Do not speculate about what happened. Anything you say can be used against you by insurance adjusters.

After the scene is handled see a doctor even if you feel completely fine. Whiplash and concussions often do not show up for 24 to 72 hours. Delaying medical care creates gaps that insurers use to reduce settlements.

Buying your first car is exciting and honestly a little overwhelming at the same time. Those are real numbers and they mean the preparation you do before you shop matters more than ever.

Here is what every first time buyer in Lawrence should do before visiting a dealership.

Figure out your actual budget first. NerdWallet recommends keeping your monthly payment under 10 percent of your take home pay. That number exists before you fall in love with a specific trim level.

Get pre-approved before you visit. Knowing your real interest rate changes the entire conversation at the dealership. You can do this online through our finance center in about two minutes.

Decide between new, CPO or used. A new Hyundai comes with the full 10 year warranty. A certified pre-owned Hyundai reinstates that warranty at a much lower price point and every CPO goes through a 173 point inspection. A standard used Hyundai offers the best value if the history checks out.

Get insurance quotes before you commit to a specific vehicle. Insurance rates vary by model and a first time buyer can save real money by factoring this in early.

Do not rush the test drive. Turn the radio off. Test every feature. Drive it on the highway. Check the back seat. This is a 48 to 72 month commitment and it deserves real time.
