Take to the skies ///

One thing that’s common among new cars is the lack of personality and enthusiasm. Too many modern cars chase that Nurburgring time, or that horsepower number. To me, the latest revision of the Mach 1 was Ford’s last attempt at making a true enthusiast car. Of course, a 911 GT3 or a C8 Z06 could outperform it on the Nurburgring, but does that really matter to a true car enthusiast? It doesn’t, at least not to me. The Mach 1 is respectably fast enough to get you in trouble, but it also has that personality that cars like the C8 lack, things like a traditional manual transmission, wide sticky tires, and a V8 that echoes throughout the mountain roads. The car really puts a smile on your face without even trying to push it and fight for a record time. That’s more important to me.

Talk to me Goose ///

This is Ford’s idea of Fighter Jet soul thrown onto a Mustang, and I am all for it. It’s sad to think about but the S550 Mach One might quite possibly one of the last enthusiasts driven cars produced. Little more type up in tomorrow’s photo posts.

This is the goal ///

Years ago, when I was a wee lad, my father and his business partner owned several air cooled Porsches. G models and 930s, up to a full track prepped and raced 993.

Back then, these weren’t sought after cars, they weren’t trendy, flashy internet cars. Most Americans considered them to be a Volkswagen Beetle in disguise, and because of that, the value absolutely tanked until the last seven to eight years.

These cars, in my opinion, are not worth the exorbitant prices they’re listed at today. But… I still want one, less for the trend and more for the nostalgia. Every time I go near one of these vintage air cooled Porsches, I’m reminded of flying down country backroads and being picked up from elementary school in either an all black 930 or that track prepped 993.

One of these cars is definitely on my radar to own in the near future, I just have to fight hard and climb the ladder to get it.

Oh and yeah; those are photos of me about 7 years old next to one of my favorite cars my father had around.

Which Datsun are you choosing? ///

This past Saturday I spent the whole night with the 66base guys, driving around in a Nismo R35, a Datsun S30, and of course we had to bring the Pandem C5 Corvette along for the ride. This night in particular hit different, not just because we were driving some legendary cars, but because it was exactly what I had always pictured going on in the background of anime and movies like Initial D and Tokyo Drift. It sounds kind of cliché, or maybe it’s something nobody else has thought of, but this is exactly how I imagined background car enthusiasts from movies, anime, and manga spending their nights in Japan. Talking cars, kicking jokes back and forth, and more importantly, driving around to different locations to shoot pictures and just having an excuse to cruise around with your homies.

This set of photos came from a completely random parking garage we stumbled across at nearly midnight. I wasn’t expecting them to turn out this good, but they came out absolutely stunning, with hints of that pure need for speed vibe.

So, if someone were to toss you the keys to either the Nismo R35 or the Datsun S30 (240z), which one are you taking? Horsepower and performance? Or mechanical feel and raw noise out of the 240z? You should already know which one I’m taking...

GODZILLA is here ///

Watching lower the Nismo R35 from basically a living room down onto the floor is pure aura farming and I am here for it.

All Roads Lead to New Friends ///

In the United States, I’m used to finding car enthusiasts at a “hang out” spot, a pull-off on a mountain road, maybe a car-friendly cafe. But in Japan, I hadn’t really experienced anything like that until today.

On a last-minute trip out with Kana in her Porsche 356, we decided to check out this street near the Imperial Palace, I believe? Apparently it’s a well-known spot for car spotting. Given the typhoon weather and how late it was, I honestly wasn’t expecting much. But I was proven wrong. As soon as we parked, we’d already made three new friends: two in Porsches, one in an M3.

I’m still not totally sure why it hit me the way it did. Maybe it’s just different because I’m in a foreign country. Either way, between this and another meetup I had with friends north of Saitama, I’m starting to realize something: no matter where you are on Earth, car enthusiasts are all the same (in the best way).
Now I’ve got a great idea for a new YouTube video. Guess we’ll see if I actually get around to posting it.
