ENJOY NEW HEALTH, COMFORT AND SAFETY IN MOTORING WITH CONDITIONED AIR IN THE 1938 HUPP

BREATHE CLEAN, FILTERED FRESH AIR WINTER and SUMMER

70 INSIDE THE CAR-BELOW ZERO OUTSIDE. With outside temperatures well below zero you can maintain even temperatures of approximately 70° inside your Hupp. This temperature is regulated by means of a simple dash control which governs the amount of hot water passing through the heater-rather than by changing the fan speed and air velocity as is necessary on ordinary hot water heaters.

LIVING ROOM TEMPERATURES IN REAR SEAT. The EVANAIR-CONDITIONER introduces 100 to 150 cubic feet of air per minute into the car at average speeds. This means complete circulation of fresh air and heat throughout the new Hupmobile. Back-seat passengers are as warm and comfortable as those in front.

NO MORE WINDSHIELD FOGGING. EVANAIR-CONDITIONING effectively reduces humidity in the car's interior. This means that windshields are kept from fogging and the air in the car is more healthful, invigorating and refreshing.

NO LONGER DO SIX PEOPLE SMOKE THE SAME CIGAR. Smoke as much as you please in the new Hupmobile with conditioned air. Smoke is quickly removed as the air is changed-without drafts.

Arrows trace the path of fresh air through the EVANAIR CONDITIONING system -specifically designed for the 1938 Hupmobile. From the intake louvers to the hood, fresh ar passes through the filter and past the baffles, and is then forced through the heating sont and into the car's interior. A defroster connection, utilizing the regular outlets above the instrument panel, is available.

The Hupmobile EVANAIR-CONDITIONER is simple in construction and requires no more service or attention than the ordinary heater. (Right) The Hupmobile EVANAIR-CONDITIONER is installed on the engine side of the dash, thus leaving full room for the legs and feet of both froot-seat passengers.

KEEPS OUT DUST, DIRT AND INSECTS. Hupmobile's
EVANAIR-CONDITIONING is a year-round comfort feature. For summer driving heat is turned off-without disconnecting the system-by completely closing the hot water valve from the instrument panel. But the rest of the system operates to filter fresh air brought into the car and to keep it circulating.

(June 5, 1940) HUPP CAR'S REPORT NEARLY COMPLETE
Tentative and Unaudited Data Show Current Assets of $176,137 at Close of '39
_
VARIOUS PROPERTIES SOLD
_
Large Loss for 17 Months to May 31 Expected Despite Deal With Graham Paige

Auditors now at work on the annual report of the Hupp Motor Car Corporation for 1939 will complete their labors in two weeks, according to a letter to shareholders signed by Percy L. Louks, secretary, under date of June 28. Tentative and unaudited figures for the year which ended Dec. 31, 1939, he said, showed total current assets of about $176,137, including cash of $27,392; fixed assets not of amortization and depreciation of $2,634,628, and funds to closed banks totaling $162,877 which are pledged as collateral to a bank loan and against which a reserve of $85,208 has been erected. Deferred charges to future operations total $22,901. On the same basis, said the letter, current liabilities were $522,248 (partly secured by claims against closed banks), which included $135,000 as provision for loss on purchase commitments. Fixed liabilities, covered by a mortgage to the Reconstruction Finance Corporation, were $852,087.

Loan on Claims Increase

Since May 31, the letter revealed, the loan on the claims against the closed banks has been increased to $118,758. Moreover, the corporation has sold its service department for $65,000 and applied $51,500 of the proceeds to reduction of the RFC mortgage. The letter continued:

"In September, 1939, the corporation entered into an agreement with Graham Paige Motor Corporation under which the latter agreed to furnish funds to complete and make additions to the tools, dies, etc., for the manufacture of the Skylark car, and to manufacture bodies and other parts of the car for this corporation. It was agreed that Graham Paige would provide itself with additional working capital of $1,500,000 by a loan from the Reconstruction Finance Corporation. In consideration of this arrangement Graham Paige received the right to use the body dies and tools for the production of a car of similar design for its own use.

"Pending completion of the dies a temporary production of 700 cars was projected by Graham Paige, of which this corporation was to receive 350. This corporation proceeded with the manufacture of its own motors, brakes and chassis parts for these cars. Of this temporary production for Hupp to date Graham Paige has manufactured 102 cars and this corporation has taken and shipped approximately sixty cars.

Reduced Plant Space

"In view of the arrangement with Graham Paige this corporation has been able to plan the contraction of operations to a much smaller plant space sufficient for the manufacture of motors and other chassis parts. A substantial reduction in overhead expense has thereby been effected and a considerable part of the buildings and equipment of the corporation freed from the requirements of operations. More than 400,000 square feet of floor space so released from operations have been leased by the corporation to others.

"Prior to Dec. 31, last, certain properties owned by subsidiaries in Ohio were disposed of, consisting of a vacant factory building in Cleveland for $77,500 (against which there were accrued taxes of $28,907) and also the plant and equipment of the Atlas Manufacturing Company at Fostoria, a wholly owned subsidiary, sold for $115,000 (against which there was a mortgage indebtedness of $75,000). The corporation also has, in the five months ended on May 31, disposed of various items of machinery and equipment not required in operations at a total price of $23,178. Notwithstanding the foregoing, the fiscal year 1939 and the five months' period ended May 31, 1940, will show a substantial loss from operations."

I am thankful for my family
and the memories we shared with these cars.
I am thankful for new friends
who become my second family.
I am thankful for the appreciation
expressed by those who enjoy our cars.
I am thankful for having
not only enough food and shelter
but the extras that permit this hobby.
I am thankful for learning new things about our cars
and working on improving things
I've already learned.
I am thankful for sunny skies at meets.
I am thankful for all the efforts expended in
keeping our cars cruising into this 21st Century. Because in a way,
these cars reflect our own hopes for ourselves ...
to be appreciated and cared for
in graceful retirement.

August 25, 1943 - September 26, 2025

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of David W. Horton, who left us unexpectedly but peacefully in his sleep on Friday, September 26, 2025, at the age of 82. David was born and raised in Black River Falls, Wis., on August 25, 1943, to the late Ralph and Mary Horton. He was a graduate of Lincoln High School in Alma Center, Wis. David was a beloved father, a loving partner, a cherished friend, and a direct and honest soul whose good humor brightened the lives of all who knew him. He touched many hearts throughout his journey, leaving behind a legacy of warmth, integrity, and deep connection.

From November 30, 1965 until November 29, 1967, he proudly served his country in the U.S. Army.

He was employed with ARAMARK as a Route Salesman for 35 years.

David was a proud and devoted member of the Hupmobile Club and the Kenosha Car Club, where his passion for classic vehicles shone brightly. Among his most prized possessions were his carefully curated collection of vintage cars and tractors each one a testament to his love for craftsmanship, history, and the open road.

David is survived by his daughter, Autumn (Brian) Horton; and his loving companion and partner, Mary Santiago.

In addition to his parents, David was preceded in death by his siblings, Gayle Horton, Gary "Spider" Horton, Dwayne "Blackie" Horton and Diane Ewell.

Entombment with full military honors will be held on Thursday, October 16, 2025, at 10 a.m. in Southern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery.

1936 Hupmobile -
ALMOST 2,200 SOLD, BUT WHERE ARE THEY NOW?

Οver the years, I've seen many old Hupmobiles, and have driven a couple. But though I've encountered several 1934 and 1935 "Aerodynamic" Hupmobiles with their bizarre three-piece windshields (as illustrated before in Auto Album), I have never seen the rare 1936 Hupmobile, except in photographs and ads. At least one survives, restored, in a private collection, and there might be two or three more, somewhere.

The year 1936 was rough for the Hupp Motor Car Corporation; the company was experiencing dire financial difficulties, even though it had already struggled through the worst of the Depression. The factory shut down for 18 months early in the 1936 season. Only 1,873 six-cylinder cars and 298 straight-eights were produced by Hupp before the shutdown. However, 238 Hupmobiles (at least 199 sixes and 34 eights) were listed as 1937 models, even though they were only unsold 1936s. Fortunately, Hupmobile was able to return in 1938, though it remained on shaky ground until 1940 when the proverbial towel was tossed in. The 40-41 seasons were bad for Hupmobile and its identical twin, the Graham, both of which were now using 36-37 Cord body dies, but with new grilles. Hupp's Cord was the "Skylark." Graham's was the "Hollywood", each the last of their breed.

By the way, the '34 Aerodynamic Hupmobile, which began the three-year styling cycle, was designed by two noted auto celebrities: Raymond Loewy (1893-1987) and Amos Northup (1889-1937). Loewy's first design was the attractive 1932 Hupmobile, and he designed Studebakers for many years later. Amos Northup styled the Wills Sainte Claire in the early 1920s, the Murray body for the stylish 1928 Hupmobile, and the classic Reo Royale of 1931, as well as the Graham "Blue Streak" of 1932 among other accomplishments. Northup did much of the design of the sharknosed "Spirit of Motion" '38-39 Grahams, but did not live to see them go into production; in February of 1937 he slipped on an icy sidewalk, hit his head hard on the pavement and soon succumbed to the injury.
On the other hand, Raymond Loewy had a much longer, illustrious career, designing many cars as well as numerous other projects.
