Summer can be tough on your vehicle in unexpected ways. Here are a few tips to consider:
π‘οΈ Engine & Climate Control
- Test the Air Conditioning: Run the AC at maximum to ensure it blows cold air; weak cooling may indicate a refrigerant leak or a failing compressor.
- Flush the Cooling System: Check the coolant reservoir level and examine radiator hoses for soft spots or cracks to prevent sudden engine overheating.
- Swap Cabin Air Filters: Replace clogged cabin and engine filters to restore HVAC airflow and optimize fuel efficiency.
π Tires & Braking Systems
- Adjust Tire Pressure: Check pressures weekly when tires are cold; summer heat expands internal air, risking over-inflation and high-speed blowouts.
- Measure Tread Depth: Ensure treads are well above the indicator bars using a penny or quarter test to avoid hydroplaning during heavy summer storms.
- Inspect Brake Pads: Verify pad thickness and watch for a spongy pedal; heavy summer traffic and high temperatures quickly wear out braking components.
π Electrical & Fluids
- Test Battery Voltage: Have a shop perform a free load test; extreme summer heat speeds up internal battery corrosion and fluid evaporation more than winter cold.
- Top Off Vital Fluids: Check dipsticks and reservoirs for engine oil, brake fluid, transmission fluid, and power steering fluid.
- Replace Wiper Blades: Install fresh rubber blades if current wipers streak, as UV rays dry out the squeegee, compromising visibility during flash floods.
π¨ Emergency Preparedness
- Build a Hot-Weather Kit: Pack jumper cables, a flashlight, a first-aid kit, a small toolset, and shelf-stable water and snacks.
- Inspect the Spare: Ensure your spare tire is fully inflated to the correct pressure as listed on your driver's door jamb placard.
