California passed its new Replacement Tire Efficiency Program on August 17, and some insiders have expressed some concerns.

The California Energy Commission says Phase 1 will save consumers $79 after 3 to 4 months and Phase 2 will increase the net savings to $153, but Goodyear’s Bret Gladfelty disputes those savings. He contends the costs of a set of tires could increase by several hundred dollars by 2033, and it would eliminate 70% of the tires on the market today.

Our sources added that California’s new Replacement Tire Efficiency Program may result in tires with longer wet stopping distances and shorter wear life.

But what does that mean for those of us who love performance tires? While anything 200tw or less, with 8/32 inch or less molded tread depth and a W speed rating or higher, is exempt, several questions still remain.
