Another great place to see close to High Plains Park is just 17 miles east of us on the north side of I-40 is the very colorful Painted Desert. These desert badlands extend about 150 miles from the Petrified Forest to the easter end of the Grand Canyon in the Four Corners area. The best and easiest place to view this is at Exit # 311 on I-40. There is a great Visitors Center with a lot of historical information about the 225 million year old history in the making and the Petrified Forest on the south side of I-40. You owe it to yourself to take the 28 mile drive through the parks and come out just south Of Holbrook Arizona and onto historic Route 66.
