Have you ever wondered how RV tank treatments actually work?
One of the biggest misconceptions in the RV industry is that all tank treatments work the same way. After spending time studying the science behind these products, we’ve learned that’s simply not true.
Most RV holding tank treatments fall into one of three categories:
• Chemical-based treatments
• Enzyme-based treatments
• Bacteria and enzyme-based treatments
Chemical-based treatments primarily work by masking odors, killing odor-causing organisms, or altering the environment inside the tank. While they can be effective at controlling odors, they don’t necessarily support the natural biological breakdown of waste.
Enzyme-based treatments use enzymes to break larger waste particles into smaller particles. Think of enzymes as tiny biological tools that help start the breakdown process.
Bacteria and enzyme-based treatments take things a step further. The bacteria consume organic waste and continuously produce additional enzymes as they work. Think of bacteria as a workforce that creates more tools while actively processing waste.
No matter which type of treatment you choose, there is one ingredient that is absolutely critical:
Water.
Without enough water, waste becomes concentrated, biological activity slows down, and odors can become more noticeable.
In fact, one of the most common mistakes we see is RV owners adding more treatment when they notice odors.
Our first question is usually:
“How much water is in the tank?”
Many odor complaints aren’t caused by a lack of additive. They’re caused by a lack of water.
A holding tank treatment is designed to work within a liquid environment. If there isn’t enough water in the tank, even the best treatment on the market will struggle to perform as intended.
A few good practices:
✔ Use plenty of water with every flush.
✔ After dumping, add several gallons of water back into the tank.
✔ Follow the treatment manufacturer’s recommended dosage.
✔ If you’re experiencing odors, check your water level before adding more treatment.
✔ Remember that no additive can overcome poor tank maintenance or years of buildup.
The truth is that water is often the most overlooked ingredient in a healthy RV holding tank system.
