Steering too 😖TighT😖 on your Classic VW?

I had a conversation with a client the other day about his steering being too tight and I wanted to share that conversation with you.

His early Ghia had multiple issues, so we put a plan together to solve the first one. I asked him to loosen the jam nut on his steering box and back out the adjustment screw on the top of the box. Then go turn the steering wheel to see if it free'd up or it was still tight.

For him, it was still tight. Come to fine out, his king pins were seized up and the recommendations on the internet were to adjust the steering box, no one suggest the king pins.

The steering box counts for about 50% of the play/tightness in the system. For this client, link pins & king pins also play a role, like 20%, and this time it wasn't for play, but tightness.

I suggested he rebuild his spindles first, then come back to the box.

Cleint was about to give up 🤷‍♂️

Purchased a new PRObuilt Steering Box ✅
Thought it was a simple swap and didn't read the installation guide ❌
Opinion creeped in that the box was the issue 😤
Finally called the PRO's and asked if he could adjust it ❌
We said NO and asked him to tell us what he torqued the hardware to ❓
He said he didn't. 😱
We asked him to read the guide and found that he had play in pitman/drop arm and it went away after the torque. ✅

That's what it costs to open Airkewld's doors every month. Before a single piece of raw material. Before powder coat, lumber, polishing, plating, or cores.

$813,000 a year to run a brick-and-mortar manufacturing company in America in 2026.

We're not posting that to complain. We're posting it because almost nobody gets to see the number behind a part.

Machinists don't work for 1980s wages. Neither do UPS drivers. The cheapest way to get a six-shooter to your door costs us $7 — and we eat it, so it ships to you free. That's the math on every box that leaves this building.

Every part we make carries a piece of that $67,800. So does every part that's been bolted to a customer's car for fifteen years and still doesn't rattle.

That's the trade. Built once, in Goodyear, Arizona, by people paid a real wage to care about it.
