Catalytic converters aren’t maintenance items. When one fails, something caused it.
Misfires, vacuum leaks, exhaust leaks, lazy O2 sensors or catalyst poisoning are usually the real culprits. If failure happens under 80,000 miles, OEM warranty may apply. Beyond that, an aftermarket converter is often the right solution — designed to last the rest of the vehicle’s life when the root issue has been corrected.
The key isn’t just choosing the replacement. It’s understanding why the original failed in the first place.
